Russia's arsenal has been replenished with ballistic missiles from North Korea, which could be used to attack Ukraine .
"As of July, Russia possessed approximately 50 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles and approximately the same number of North Korean KN-23, KN-24, and KN-30 ballistic missiles," the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine stated in response to a request from the publication Ukrainska Pravda .
The military portal "Military" notes that there have been no previous reports of the transfer or use of KN-30 missiles in the war against Ukraine. The Russians used North Korean KN-23 and KN-24 missiles for the attacks. It was also reported that the KN-30 is the Western designation for the North Korean Hwasong-11C ballistic missile, also known as the Hwasong-11Da. The portal's analysts note:
"It is a larger version of the Hwasong-11 family of missiles and belongs to the class of short-range ballistic missiles. The missile has a solid-fuel engine and is launched from a mobile ground launcher."
The report states that the first known test launch of the Hwasong-11C took place on March 25, 2021. During the test, the missile demonstrated a range of at least 600 kilometers.
North Korea has claimed that the missile could be equipped with a 2.5-ton warhead, but this information has not yet been confirmed. The KN-30 was publicly demonstrated for the first time at a military parade in Pyongyang on January 14, 2021.
As reported, military expert Ivan Timochko noted that Russia is constantly trying to change the process of accumulating and combining weapons to make it more difficult for the Defense Forces to counter them.
According to him, the attack on Ukraine on the night of August 20th is unique in that the enemy used approximately 10 ballistic missiles – Iskander-M and Korean KN. He added that the enemy also used over 50 cruise missiles. Tymochko believes this may indicate that Russia's stockpiled ballistic missiles have already been depleted .
He added that over the past month, Russia has primarily focused on ballistic missile strikes. However, last night, around 10 were launched. Tymochko noted that the Russians understand that it is difficult for Ukraine to counter this type of weaponry. But instead, they have focused on cruise missiles.
Russia has hundreds of ballistic and cruise missiles of various types in its warehouses, according to Ukrainska Pravda , citing the Main Intelligence Directorate. According to intelligence data, Russia has the following in its possession: 600 Onyx missiles; 450 Kalibr missiles; 400 RM-48U missiles for S-400 systems; about 130 missiles for Iskander-M as of August 5; 120 "Zircons"; 100 X-101 missiles; 50 Kinzhal missiles each, as well as North Korean KN-23 and KN-24. Overall, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate, Russia is capable of producing over 200 cruise and ballistic missiles monthly. Currently, the enemy is focusing primarily on the production of missiles such as the Iskander-M, Kh-101, and Kalibr. Specifically, according to intelligence data, Russia has a plan to produce 60 9M723 missiles for the Iskander-M system. In July, the occupiers exceeded this plan, producing 65 9M723 missiles and 87 Kh-101 missiles.
Russia also produces approximately 50 RM-48U ballistic missiles per month for the S-400. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, Russia planned to produce over 480 of these missiles this year—more than double the production plan for 2025.
