As reported the offensive of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, during which 26 settlements were liberated , took place in the strictest secrecy.
Renowned OSINT expert and military observer Clement Molin explained what exactly was happening on this section of the front.
According to him, the first counterattacks by the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Pokrovskoe area began in early February, when Ukrainian units cleared several settlements previously infiltrated by Russian troops. The direction of the situation could already be determined by the traces of artillery strikes in the snow. By February 21, it was clear that Russian artillery had been pushed far back: more than 10 kilometers from the front line, its impact was practically undetectable.
On March 10, a video surfaced of Ukrainian forces' mechanized assault on occupied settlements located far from the then-known front line, marking the second phase of the operation. At the end of March, Ukrainian airborne assault units advanced further north, toward Ivanivka-Komar, and in April and May, they launched a slow and almost invisible offensive, using small groups, resulting in very little video footage.
The first results of this phase became visible in May, although video confirmation remained limited. A more complete picture emerged by mid-June thanks to additional data—satellite imagery and source reports. At the same time, Russian units attempted to obfuscate the information space with staged videos of flag-planting, seeking to conceal the true state of affairs from both the enemy and their own command.
Molin noted that the operation was difficult to track precisely because of a lack of information: Russian units on the ground concealed the real situation, while Ukrainian units maintained almost complete information silence—with the exception of the Skala unit.
The expert explained why operational security is so important in such cases: as soon as open-source analysts begin publicly discussing the situation, research centers and journalists quickly become involved, actively seeking additional information. This can draw attention to a situation that the adversary's regional commander had previously simply overlooked.
According to Molin, the offensive itself is small-scale and is taking place on a secondary sector of the front—there's nothing fundamentally new about that. However, thanks to it, individual Ukrainian units managed to strike five Russian armies and slow the advance on Huliaipole, while simultaneously creating pressure across a broad swathe of the front.
Molin emphasized that it's important to understand that the main battles are still ahead. The battles for Komar and Uspenovka may or may not begin, but operational security will still apply here, so information may become scarce in the coming months. This, he said, doesn't mean nothing is happening on the front.
