After a modern Russian Su-57 fighter jet crashed near Moscow, Russia's military leadership is in shock, as the plane was likely shot down by its own air defense system. However, as retired British Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon writes in a column for The Telegraph , the question remains whether the incident was tampered with by Ukrainian intelligence.
He recalled that this event coincided with Ukraine's strike on an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea. The vessel, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, was carrying Russian weapons intended to escalate Iranian operations against American soldiers in the Middle East.
"Whether all the details are ultimately confirmed or not, these two events together could become a turning point in this war," the author believes. He explained that throughout military history, superior intelligence has often proven more decisive than superior firepower. After Operation Spiderweb, it became clear to everyone that Ukraine was capable of conducting complex operations on Russian territory.
"If the reports of the downed Su-57 prove true, they indicate that the SBU has penetrated not only Russian communications but also Putin's very air defense structure. His obsession with personal security and survival has created multi-layered defenses around the Kremlin, but these same layers may have their own vulnerabilities," he wrote, adding that "if Ukraine is also responsible for disrupting Russian arms shipments to Iran, the implications extend far beyond Europe."
He suggested that, in accordance with the art of war, "to strike not simply where the enemy is weakest, but where political, military, and strategic factors converge," Ukraine has begun to launch strikes that not only weaken Russia's combat capability but also expose "the Kremlin's inability to protect its own strategic assets. This strengthens the broader Western alliance." He writes that during his visit to the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy will need to present a compelling argument that "Russia is supplying weapons and materiel that could ultimately threaten American troops in the Middle East." At the same time, Russia is losing control of its own airspace over Moscow. Then, he believes, it will be difficult for President Donald Trump to object to providing Ukraine "everything it needs to complete the job it started."
"If the Kremlin can no longer guarantee the security of its own capital and protect its most modern aircraft from destruction in its own airspace, then the aura of invincibility that has sustained Putin's regime for a quarter of a century is beginning to crack," the author wrote.
He noted that if the Americans' resolve strengthens and Ukrainian intelligence continues to outmaneuver the Kremlin, the war will enter its final phase. As a reminder, a military aircraft crashed in the Moscow region on July 23. The flight was reportedly a training one. The pilot managed to eject. The downed aircraft was most likely a Su-57D fighter jet, a two-seat training version of the fighter , journalists speculated. It may have been performing a demonstration flight at the time of the crash.
