Ukrainian strikes are increasingly reaching deep into Russian territory, and air raid sirens are now being recorded in almost half of the country's regions, Bloomberg reports .
According to the publication, in the past week alone, missile alerts have been issued in at least five regions of the Volga Federal District, in the southern regions, including Astrakhan, and in at least four regions of the North Caucasus. Similar warnings were also issued in central Russia – in the Moscow, Vladimir, Tambov, Oryol, and Lipetsk regions.
Analysts note that the geographic scope of the alerts demonstrates a significant change in the nature of Ukrainian strikes and their expanding range. While air raid alerts were previously limited to border regions, they now cover significantly more remote areas of Russia. According to Bloomberg, at least one missile alert has been issued this year in regions where more than 70% of Russia's population lives. Threats have also emerged in previously remote regions. Specifically, the Omsk region in Western Siberia, nearly 3,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, first issued a missile alert in June. Similar alerts were also issued in the Ural region.
In a number of cities, the aftermath of the attacks is already impacting civilian life. In Samara, for example, ground public transportation was temporarily suspended during one of the alarms.
There are also reports of the aftermath of strikes on Russian infrastructure. Five people were killed in one attack in the Voronezh Region, and two in the Volgograd Region. A fire at an oil refinery in the Krasnodar Region continues to burn after a massive drone strike. Ukraine is increasingly using long-range drones and domestically produced cruise missiles, including the Neptune and Flamingo. According to open sources, their range can reach 1,000 to 3,000 kilometers, enabling them to strike targets across a significant portion of European Russia.
Military analysts note that such strikes have not only a military but also an economic and psychological effect.
"Ukraine often tries to oversaturate Russian air defenses with drones so that cruise missiles can penetrate them," said Sam Cranney-Evans, a military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
Douglas Barry, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, also believes that this represents a qualitative change in the nature of the campaign:
"This marks a significant evolution in Ukraine's long-range strike campaign."
According to him, strikes on Russian infrastructure "damage elements of the industrial military base, deal a blow to the economy and show the population that war has its price." As a reminder, the SBU launched a 40-day operation to influence Russia with the aim of persuading it to end the war.
The campaign began with massive strikes deep in Russia's rear and occupied territories. In particular, a large-scale drone attack on Moscow and the Moscow region continued yesterday. Explosions and a fire were reported in Yegoryevsk, as well as two hits in Dubna, Moscow region. A second strike was detected at the Dubna Space Communications Center in the Moscow region. He noted the special status of this facility, which is used for intelligence and military coordination.
