Our Thailand Elephant Experience Was Magical… But Is It Ethical?
We did one of the most beautiful elephant experiences in Thailand… but is “ethical” elephant tourism more complicated than it looks?
Today we’re just outside Chiang Mai at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, one of the most popular elephant experiences in Thailand, where Ann gets to meet elephants up close for the very first time.
We feed them, make special food balls, walk with them, bathe with them in the river, join them for a muddy elephant spa day, and experience one of the most unforgettable animal encounters we’ve ever had. But this video is also asking the question a lot of travelers have now: is an elephant sanctuary still ethical if tourists can feed, touch, bathe, and interact with the elephants?
Elephants are one of the most important symbols of Thailand, but their history with tourism has not always been beautiful. For years, elephant riding, performances, logging, and forced entertainment were a major part of the industry. Thankfully, Thailand has changed a lot, and many places now focus on no riding, no shows, better care, more space, proper food, medical support, and a safer life for elephants that cannot simply return to the wild.
But the conversation is not black and white. In this video, we share the full experience honestly: the emotional moments, the beauty of being so close to these incredible animals, the care we saw from the mahouts, Ann’s first reaction to meeting elephants, and the harder questions around elephant tourism in Chiang Mai.
Is viewing-only elephant tourism the most ethical option? Probably. Can responsible sanctuaries still play an important role in caring for rescued and domestic elephants? Also yes. Should travelers think carefully before choosing where to spend their money? Absolutely.
This was a magical, muddy, emotional, and eye-opening day with elephants in Northern Thailand — and by the end, we try to answer the real question: Should you visit an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai?
Let me know what you think in the comments. Would you do an elephant experience like this, or do you think tourists should only visit viewing-only sanctuaries?
