Claims of a supposed "catastrophic situation" are once again being heard in Russia's pseudo-patriotic segment. In this case, the reference is to units of the 29th Army of the Russian Armed Forces. Ukrainian journalist Denis Kazansky reports this, citing the Z-channel War Zone. According to the propagandist, the undermanning rate in some brigades can reach up to 60%. Furthermore, cases of alcohol abuse, looting, and unauthorized abandonment of positions are frequently reported among soldiers. Z-Channel also reports the use of harsh disciplinary measures and even reprisals within units. The channel reports on corruption, including in humanitarian aid, transportation, and payments for fallen soldiers. Furthermore, the publication alleges that command may be inflating combat statistics and concealing actual losses. So, commanders deceive generals, and generals deceive president Vladimir Putin. Military bloggers, former commanders, and intelligence analysts frequently report that the Russian chain of command in the Ukraine war is marred by severe miscommunication. Lower-ranking commanders and generals have repeatedly been accused of inflating battlefield successes and hiding heavy casualties, which creates a distorted "picture of a successful war" for President Vladimir Putin. This systemic deception results from a rigid authoritarian hierarchy and a fear of retaliation, creating a cycle of false reporting at every level. Field commanders and lower-level officers frequently mask grim realities and territorial setbacks on the frontline to avoid the wrath of their superiors or to secure military medals. Generals and the Ministry of Defense aggregate these rosy, fabricated frontline assessments. They pass heavily sanitized "victories" up to the political leadership in the Kremlin to justify the ongoing war effort and protect their own positions. Because intelligence and reporting are filtered to meet the political expectations of the Russian leadership, President Vladimir Putin is insulated from the reality of the military's underperformance, logistical failures, and economic strain.
Recently, Russian commanders told Putin that Moscow’s forces had captured the towns of Myrnohrad, Rodynske and Artemivka in the Donetsk region, as well as Hulyaipole and Stepnohirsk in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to Russian state media and the Kremlin. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces denied the unverified claims, writing on Facebook: “The top political leadership of the aggressor state is once again resorting to spreading fake statements about significant ‘successes’ of the Russian army on the battlefield.”
It described the situation in Huliaipole and Myrnohrad as “difficult” but said defensive operations are ongoing, adding: “It is obvious that the Russians’ lies are primarily aimed at foreign partners.” It is not the first time Russian authorities have proclaimed battlefield advances. Gerasimov in November claimed in a televised report that Kremlin forces had captured Kupyansk, before the spurious claim was debunked as Zelensky visited the city in December. The Kremlin also claimed last month that Russia has seized Pokrovsk, a claim that has been disputed both by Ukraine and independent analysts.
