Medium-range drones and new tactical planning are giving Ukraine a boost in the war that hasn't been seen in a long time. This is the subject of a Business Insider article detailing the latest phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The situation on the battlefield has changed dramatically in recent months. Specifically, for the first time since 2023, Ukraine has begun recapturing more territory than Russia is capturing. To slow Russia's advance, Ukraine has begun striking targets Russia considered safe. These include strikes on warehouses, air defense systems, and logistics in the operational rear.
"The goal is to isolate parts of the battlefield, making it difficult for Russia to move troops and supplies to where they are needed," the article says. Analysts say Ukrainian operational planning has changed. This allows for strategic operations rather than simply responding to Russian attacks. It also represents a "challenge" to the war of attrition that Russia has attempted to impose. Significantly, despite the battlefield being saturated with drones, Ukraine is able to deploy small armored formations capable of "dynamic advancement and combat operations." Large-scale maneuvers are still impossible, but Ukraine is "creating the conditions for a potential breakthrough," journalists quoted ISW analysts as saying. This is also a result of the influence of medium-range drones on the battlefield. They are quite powerful, unlike FPV drones, and less expensive than long-range drones. "Destroying these medium-range rear-area targets creates new logistical challenges for the Russian military, as it now takes them much longer to deliver weapons to the front lines," the authors write. The UK Ministry of Defence also confirmed that this has been a factor in the current success.
Analysts predicted that the Russian army would actively seek countermeasures. However, this will take time, and therefore, there will be more attacks on logistics in the coming weeks and months.
Taras Berezovets, head of the military cooperation department of the Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine, told reporters that launching large-scale medium-range strikes would "change the front line." Furthermore, Ukraine now has the systems to take advantage of this advantage.
The point is that, compared to the first years of the war, Ukraine has improved its battlefield orientation and action planning, allowing it to "quickly identify priority targets and exert greater influence on the overall course of combat operations." Ukraine's new Delta combat management system played a decisive role in this. It integrates intelligence, satellite information, and data from combat units and drones, providing a complete picture of combat operations for target designation and coordination. As a reminder, according to experts, the Defense Forces have blocked the occupying forces' logistics route to temporarily occupied Crimea. This is causing problems for both the military and civilian Russian contingents. Moreover, Ukrainian strikes are putting pressure not only on the main highway connecting cities in the occupied south with Crimea, but also on secondary roads.
At the same time, to achieve a strategic effect, the Defense Forces don't need to destroy all Russian forces in Crimea. It will be enough to make the occupiers' presence there problematic, according to retired Captain 1st Rank Andrei Ryzhenko.
