Putin has almost completely stopped traveling around Russia, suddenly canceling: the gap between his visits to the regions has reached a record 196 days. According to the Agency , his last visit outside the regions where he resides was on November 6, 2025, in Samara—seven months ago. Such a long pause, 196 days , was unheard of even during the pandemic, when the longest break between trips was 132 days. There was also a significant pause in international travel. Before China, Putin's last international visit was to Turkmenistan on December 11-12. The break lasted 158 days.
After his visit to China, Putin also didn't visit any Russian regions, although he had previously often combined such trips. After his visit to China in 2025, he traveled to Vladivostok and Russky Island, and in 2023, to Perm and the Southern Military District headquarters in Rostov-on-Don.
Since the beginning of the year, his public events have been held almost entirely in the Kremlin, Novo-Ogaryovo, the Moscow region, or St. Petersburg. Even the anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad at Piskarevskoye Cemetery was held without spectators for the first time. The likely reason is security and fear of attacks from Ukraine. In late 2025, Russian authorities reported an attempted attack on Putin's residence in Valdai. Later, Western sources suggested that Putin had stopped visiting Valdai, working more often from secure residences, and that the Federal Protective Service had increased security. The Kremlin formally denies this, but the figures show otherwise: amid war and drone attacks, Putin is increasingly less likely to appear in places where it is impossible to fully control the route, the audience, and the risks.

The FSO has complete control over all logistics: routes, timing, and drivers. Personal cars and taxis are effectively prohibited for those close to the president. This means total control over the movements of everyone who might be close to the head of the Kremlin. Surveillance systems are now installed in the homes of cooks, bodyguards, and photographers. The Federal Protective Service fears recruitment or assassination plots through Putin's inner circle. The Kremlin is now suspecting not only officials and military personnel, but also service personnel – those who prepare food, provide security, and film protocol footage. The security measures fit into the overall picture. The Financial Times reported that Putin is spending more time in underground bunkers . European intelligence is recording the risk of a coup involving Sergei Shoigu. The Washington Post reports a conflict between Kiriyenko and the FSB's 2nd Service over the regime's survival strategy.
