Ukrainian units have begun using a new tactic: equipping long-range attack drones with unguided missiles to strike targets deep behind Russian lines, particularly air defense systems, Business Insider reports.
The Unmanned Systems Force notes that fixed-wing drones can carry up to eight missiles each. The missiles are launched from under the wings in rapid succession and used to strike ground targets.
According to military reports, at least one such attack was carried out against a naval base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in occupied Crimea. There are also reports of missiles being used against air defense crews in the Russian rear. In the captions accompanying the attack videos, military personnel note that the objective is to "zero out" the machine gun crews and man-portable air defense systems that are attempting to shoot down the drones.
The Unmanned Systems Forces also stated that such drones can operate at depths of up to 500 kilometers, which is roughly the distance from the Ukrainian border to Moscow.
In addition to missile armament, drones continue to carry standard explosive munitions. The military notes that the new tactics allow for the combination of cheaper missiles for air defense suppression with more powerful warheads for key targets.
Analysts note that the use of unguided missiles from drones reduces risks to crews and increases the effectiveness of strikes deep within enemy defenses, particularly against mobile air defense systems.
Following the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine's defense industry experienced rapid growth. Over the course of several years of war, Ukraine became a global center for the development of drones, electronic warfare systems, and modern warfare technologies.
Norwegian expert Fabian Hofman noted that Ukrainian long-range weapons could become the only viable option for Europe in the near future. This primarily concerns long-range drones, which are already in mass production. He argues that Europe's arsenals of long-range and deep-range weapons are insufficient. In his opinion, European arsenals of long-range and deep-seated weapons are insufficient. Efforts to replenish them have been slow, and the realistic timeframe for rearmament stretches until the 2030s. However, this need not be decided in advance.
"European states have three compelling paths to rapid rearmament in the deep strike area: acquiring Ukrainian systems, acquiring commercially available solutions from outside Ukraine, and accelerating development programs to the level of emergency measures," he wrote.
Hoffman noted that over the past four years, Ukraine has developed a vast and diverse arsenal of long-range and deep-sea missiles, including long-range drones, mini-cruise missiles, and heavy cruise missiles. Ballistic missiles are also under development.
"If European states prioritize strike range and wish to quickly deploy capabilities with a range comparable to the Tomahawk ground-launched cruise missile, Ukrainian manufacturers of long-range drones may be the only viable alternative in the near term. The latter have previously noted that they have excess capacity to fulfill European orders, which would also help create additional capacity to supply the Ukrainian armed forces. A significant European order would test this proposal," he explained.
In addition, according to the expert, European states could also seek to join existing programs such as FirePoint's Flamingo ground-launched cruise missile, or the FP-7 and FP-9.
