Due to unusual snowfall, eight flights, including three operated by foreign carriers, were canceled at Moscow's Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports. Furthermore, as of 8:00 AM Moscow time, seven flights were delayed for more than two hours. Rosaviatsia reported this on its Telegram channel. According to the agency, between 6:00 and 8:00 AM Moscow time, the airports handled 61 flights. Since the beginning of the day, the airports have handled 276 flights: 168 departures and 108 arrivals. No aircraft were diverted to alternate airfields.
Eyewitnesses captured footage of long traffic jams at a public transport stop. Such a queue had formed as early as six in the morning.
Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, reported on February 19 that snowfall in Moscow and the surrounding region would continue overnight. He said light precipitation is forecast for the day of February 20, but no further daily snowfall is expected. However, this winter's snowfall maximum, currently 61 cm, could be broken. During the first hours of snowfall, snowdrifts at the VDNKh base station reached 49 centimeters. In Balchug, the snow cover increased to 58 centimeters, and in the Tushino area, to 54 centimeters. On average, the snowfall increased by about seven centimeters. A southern cyclone will continue to move north through the Moscow region throughout the day. Weather stations reported visibility deteriorating to 600-1000 meters. A severe traffic jam has formed on the Moscow Ring Road. Witnesses reported trucks getting stuck due to snowdrifts and stalling on the shoulders. Authorities have urged Muscovites and visitors to use the metro today if possible. The worst of the storm is expected between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM Moscow time. Winds have already reached 12-14 meters per second. A storm warning is in effect in the capital until February 20. Forecasters have warned of blizzards, icy conditions, and winds up to 17 meters per second. Snowfalls hit not only Moscow but also Bryansk, Kursk, and Orel overnight. Between 15 and 23 millimeters of precipitation fell in 12 hours. That's more than half the monthly average.
On February 19, Rosaviatsia reported that 29 flights had already been cancelled at Moscow airports due to heavy snowfall, and eight planes had been diverted to alternate airfields since the start of the day.
