In a basement command post in the Kharkiv region, hundreds of kilometers from the drone over Russian-controlled territory, pilots wait for movement. When a vehicle appears, they nudge the joystick, causing the drone to dive toward the target, disrupting Russian supply lines deep behind the front lines, the Associated Press reports.
"Our mission is to cut off their logistics. Cut off their supply lines, and the infantry on the front lines will be left without food, without ammunition, without night vision goggles, without batteries. Nothing. That's how we wear them down in every way," noted the K-2 brigade commander, call sign "Ket."
Until recently, a significant portion of this territory was inaccessible to Ukrainian forces, according to media reports. Frontline drones lacked sufficient range, and long-range drones were used exclusively for strategic targets at distances of hundreds of kilometers. Between them, a corridor of 25–200 kilometers remained, where Russian troops and equipment moved virtually unimpeded.
According to available data, medium-range drones equipped with Starlink satellite communications have begun to close this gap, turning the Russian rear area into an active combat zone. According to Samuel Bendett, a researcher at the Center for Naval Analyses, this is putting constant pressure on Russian logistics lines and making it impossible to supply certain sections of the front.
For example, the K-2 unit's command post is located in an ordinary office space, cluttered with coffee mugs and energy drink cans. In May, the brigade conducted 800 medium-range drone launches, 650 of which hit targets.
"When I was a kid, I used to go to computer clubs where we'd play Counter-Strike on a local network. The competitions here are pretty much the same. It's about who can destroy the most enemy troops or the largest target," said a 20-year-old pilot with the call sign "Pharaoh."
The turning point, which is emphasized, was SpaceX's shutdown of unauthorized Russian access to Starlink, which disrupted enemy drones and communications.
"What has changed is that now eight out of ten flights are successful," Pharaoh noted, adding that just a few months ago the situation was the opposite.
As it turns out, the K-2 unit uses the Dart drone, one of the cheapest in the growing fleet of medium-range drones, made of polystyrene foam, wood, and 3D-printed parts. Larger drones, particularly the Hornet, carry heavier payloads for strikes against bridges and other infrastructure.
The Russians were caught off guard when the campaign intensified three months ago and are now deploying mobile fire teams and other countermeasures, the source notes. However, the speed, scale, and surprise factor have allowed Ukraine to remain one step ahead for now.
Researcher Bendett noted that the Russians' weakness is coordination between units: if information about a threat is not quickly transmitted to neighboring units, they will be unable to intercept drones.
The campaign is reportedly focused on the roads connecting occupied Mariupol, Berdyansk, Melitopol and the Crimean Peninsula – the main supply arteries for Russian troops in southern and eastern Ukraine.
