Ruinart claims to be the first-ever Champagne house, founded before all the other Maisons de Champagne back in 1729 in Reims, the capital city of the Champagne region of France.
Ruinart was named after the Benedictine monk Dom Ruinart, born in 1657 and who died in 1709 leaving to his nephew Nicolas Ruinart many books of his own writings about how to make wine with bubbles. 20 years later, Maison Ruinart was founded.
Through these nearly 300 years of History, Ruinart has gone to become one of the very most famous and respected of all Champagne producers, in part thanks to it being part of the LVMH Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy group, the French luxury conglomerate that owns many high-end luxury brands in fashion but also many top wineries around the world like Chateau Cheval Blanc or Yquem in Bordeaux, Ardberg and Glenmorangie whiskies, Hennessy Cognac and many of the most prestigious Champagne brands including Moet & Chandon, Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Krug Mercier, and more.
Ruinart if particularly famous for its Blanc de Blancs Champagne that comes in a distinctive transparent bottle letting the golden color of the wine apparent and giving a bottle a luxurious look.
Ruinart Blanc de Blancs is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes from the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims areas.
Ruinart also makes a Rosé sparkling wine, blend of 45% Chardonnay with 55% Pinot Noir.
The R de Ruinart cuvée is a special selection blend of some high-quality vineyards with 40% Chardonnay, 19% Pinot Noir and 25% Pinot Meunier with a higher proportion of reserve wines from previous vintages.
Finally, Dom Ruinart is the prestige vintage Champagne released with over 10 years of ageing in the house’s cellar. Current available vintages are vintage 2006 and 2004. Dom Ruinart puts an emphasis on Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs, Chouilly, Le Mesnil and Avize making about 2/3 of the final blend.
Dom Ruinart is also made as a rosé sparkling.
I’ve asked Ruinart a few times for samples to taste their Champagne and make wine review videos for this channel to share with you guys my thoughts about them. They’ve never bothered answering. Someday…
