A House in the Rock | Where Architecture Meets the West Coast Forest

Perched on a dramatic granite outcrop and embraced by a canopy of towering cedars and Douglas firs, this West Vancouver residence is a study in restraint, material harmony, and connection to place.

The home replaces one lost to fire — a rebirth that allowed for both architectural innovation and a return to the site’s natural rhythm. The landscaping restores native West Coast flora, weaving the home back into the granite, ferns, and salal that define the region.

Organized in three horizontal bands, the architecture transitions from raw concrete grounded in the rock to warm wood tones on the main floor and luminous white metal on the private upper level. Each band defines a different rhythm of living — from communal openness to private retreat.

Inside, a serene palette of white oak, soft taupe, and muted tones mirrors the calm of the surrounding forest. Every surface, from handrail to window frame, follows a philosophy of tone-in-tone cohesion — a quiet conversation between material, light, and texture.

This is more than a home; it’s a rebalancing of architecture within its landscape — an act of renewal carved gently into the stone of the West Coast.
