Inside a Barn-Inspired House Designed Around Nature

The Barn Bistro is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional barn, designed to connect architecture, craftsmanship, and the surrounding landscape.

Set within a natural setting, this 105-square-meter semi-open structure has been transformed into a small bistro and wine terrace. Rather than becoming an isolated object, the building continues the character of the traditional barns once found throughout the region.

Designed by SAGRA Architects, the project uses a restrained palette of oak, basalt, and slate. A distinctive pierced basalt wall forms one side of the building, while a large three-part oak sliding wall can open across its entire length.

When the timber panels slide away, the boundary between inside and outside almost disappears. Natural light passes through the openings in the stone and timber, creating constantly changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.

Inside, exposed wooden beams rise toward the roof, forming a gentle arch that gives the bistro a warm and expressive character. The stone walls and slate roof also establish a visual connection with the nearby Winemaker's House.
