OXIDIZE'!? SpaceX Revealed WHY Starship Flight 10 Heat Shield Discolored after Reentry...
Yet at the very end, something unusual caught viewers’ attention: the heat shield. Its color and coverage looked different from expectations, raising important questions.
Why is Ship 37’s heat shield in this condition, and how should SpaceX refine this critical system moving forward? Let’s dive into the answers on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
It can be said that compared to the Super Heavy booster, the journey of the Ship draws much more attention. This is because this stage of the mission has faced numerous problems on earlier flights, and it also carries greater responsibility since it must accomplish many tasks, with the ability to return safely being the most critical.
Remarkably, after three consecutive flights that ended with problems, SpaceX has now successfully brought the Ship back. Previous challenges, such as harmonic reactions within the structure, hardware malfunctions in the engine compartment, or failures in the composite overwrapped pressure vessels that damaged the fuel tank and caused methane leaks in the nosecone, have been resolved.

Yet within this major success, there is another factor that must be addressed. That is the heat shield, the system that protects the Ship during the most dangerous phase of the mission. More than any other stage, re-entry is the harshest and most demanding test in Starship’s flight.
On this occasion, the heat shield did its job well, protecting the Ship as it endured extreme forces. The only noticeable issue was a small fire near the base of the aft flap, although this problem had already been present before re-entry. The upgrades that SpaceX introduced and tested on this flight can therefore be considered successful.

However, as mentioned at the start of the discussion, the heat shield this time displayed something unusual. A large, striking orange region appeared across the vehicle, which was not visible in earlier flights where we saw Starship return intact. What made it even stranger was that this phenomenon was not evenly distributed but rather concentrated from the bottom of the payload section.
Why did this occur?
To begin with, it is certain that the orange discoloration represents areas that experienced extreme heating during re-entry. At first, some believed that tiles had fallen off, exposing the stainless steel structure to the intense re-entry environment, which would explain the discoloration. Yet this explanation is unlikely. The tiles appeared intact before the flip maneuver, and it is doubtful that such a large number could have been lost at once without a visible impact.
