China's new Attempt to Catch rocket by Clone SpaceX Chopstick BUT...
China’s reusable rocket race is heating up, and CosmoLeap is preparing a rocket that looks remarkably familiar: a fully reusable vehicle designed to return to Earth and eventually be caught by robotic arms. With Leap-1 moving through hardware testing and a first flight targeted for 2027, China’s “Rocket Copycat” could soon enter the real-world test phase.
CosmoLeap’s Leap-1 is a roughly 70-meter methane-powered rocket designed around ground-based booster recovery. Its tower-mounted robotic arms are conceptually similar to SpaceX’s Mechazilla, while the company has also explored offshore recovery concepts. Recent testing of the second-stage avionics bay and YQ-1 engine brings Leap-1 another step closer to stage-level testing and its eventual first launch.
China's new Attempt to Catch rocket by Clone SpaceX Chopstick BUT...
In this video, we will answer:
What is CosmoLeap building?
How does Leap-1’s catch system work?
How close is China to its first rocket catch?
What did CosmoLeap just test?
How does Leap-1 compare with Starship?
Could SpaceX catch Ship on Flight 15?
Why is Ship harder to catch than Super Heavy?
Can CosmoLeap turn its concept into a reusable rocket?
But the most important comparison is not simply the appearance of the rockets or their catch towers. SpaceX has already accumulated years of Falcon 9 experience, multiple Starship test flights, and successful Super Heavy tower catches. CosmoLeap still needs to prove that its engines, vehicle, guidance, recovery system, and launch infrastructure can work together on an actual mission.
