Last summer, we had 1.3 acres of our pine stand forestry mulched with a skid steer and mulcher. That job cost us $200 per hour for someone else to do it. Fast forward to the present time, and we have a BaumaLight MP360 mulcher for our tractor. The MP360 has a PTO driven mulching drum that can handle mulching 3" diameter trees with ease. That number can be increased if you stop and chew.
BaumaLight is located an hour and a half west of Toronto, Canada, where the MP360 is manufactured. BaumaLight offers a wide range of equipment beyond mulchers, including models for tractors, skid steers, and excavators. 7:27 a.m. It is not raining yet.
Supposed to rain later today, but I
think we've had enough direct sunlight
to dry out one of the two areas that I
really want to focus on with this
mulchure. the the trail ride that I just
recorded for this channel. Uh can't get
to that one today. It's just too muddy
on the way to it. So, instead, I'm going
to a little spot that's kind of clear,
kind of open, and big time overgrown.
Just to recap the entire setup here,
this is a bad boy 4035H
tractor. 4035. So, it's a 35 horsepower
tractor with 29.5
PTO horsepower. And I have a grapple up
front to move stuff around as needed.
The mulchure on the back. This is the
real star of today. I want to really put
some good use on this. This is a Balmite
MP 360. M for mulchure, P for PTO
powered, and I'm not too sure on a 360,
but they also have an MS. The S is for a
skid steer. Uh and then various various
different sizes. This is not their
smallest one. They make these much
smaller for smaller tractors. Now, this
one is sized the range of of tractor for
this particular one. Uh my tractor falls
close to the bottom end range. Close.
Not quite there, but close. And that is
because if I decide to upgrade tractors
up to like a 50 horsepower tractor, this
is still within the range for a 50
horsepower if I'm not mistaken.
So, what is this? It is.
It is an aggressive mulure. PTO powered
mulure. So, right here is the gearbox.
We have a slip cut slip clutch, excuse
me, on the PTO shaft going into the
gearbox. Gearbox has a shaft going out
this side with a pulley. This drum over
here has another pulley and a belt
connects them. On board is a spare belt
right there. And that that uh drivetrain
spins this drum. On this drum is a bunch
a bunch of whackers. Now, I've already
used this as you can see. I just tested
it out a little bit in the clearing that
I'm standing on right now, and
it is rewarding to see the before and
after instantly. A lot of instant
gratification with this particular
implement. Today's objective is
multifaceted. I guess you could say
multiple objectives. I've got to produce
a bunch of photographs and marketing
images for Bomalite. Uh, you know, part
of part of uh putting these machines out
in the wild, I guess you could say, in
front of viewers is to produce marketing
images and whatnot. Marketing marketing
media. And that's what one thing that I
want to accomplish today. As well as
I really want to clear up this
particular area. I've been wanting to
clear this up since uh I first uncovered
it on the property. This this particular
area we're going to, we call it baby
hawk area because when we first
discovered this trail, there was a
downed tree, big diameter downed tree.
And one time when I drove up to it with
our old side by side, this massive hawk
just you could hear the
you could hear the air off the off the
wings as it lifted out of this tree and
then flew away. Whoa. Kind of kind of
shocked me because it was 5t from me.
And then the next time we went up there,
I realized why the hawk was there
because there was a bunch of baby hawks
down below the tree. And these hawks, I
don't know what what type of uh hawk it
was, but they were they were like the
size of a chicken, full grown chicken,
and they were that fuzzy white color.
So, they weren't they didn't have their
their feathers on them or whatever. Uh
anyway, so we we we didn't mess with
that tree until they were gone. They
were completely gone. Then I I moved the
tree out of the way and opened up this
big clearing area. Now I want to finally
a year later tame that area. We are deep
deep into the woods right now and I've
got about 3 lb if you measure it that
way of mosquito spray on right now
thanks to a very very deep
gully right there. That's way deeper
than what it looks.
The trail is dry right here, which is
great. That's the trail we came in on.
This is the trail that I cut around the
tree, the baby hawk tree when there were
hawks in it. But this is the real trail.
And this little sunny spot up here is
the focus for today. Now, most of this
is just overgrown vines
and small stuff that, you know, a rotary
cutter could handle. But in here, we've
got a lot of small trees that I may or
may not want to get into. I'm just going
to kind of expand as I go and and assess
as I go.
Uh, but right here is a huge limb that
came off of that tree. There's another
limb just dangling right there, ready to
fall. That's stuck up there. That's fun.
Uh, but all of this I want to clear out
and make it to where you can drive
through here and figure out what is over
here. If I'm not mistaken, over there
was some berries. Actually, let's go
check on that. See if there is any.
These were uh ah I think that's it right
there. Southern dewberries.
Yep, southern deberry vines have taken
over, which as far as my daughter's
concerned is great. She loves them.
But there's a lot of uh junk under here
that I want to open up and maybe have
this as a nice grassy area. Yeah, this
was all berries last year. Not so much
this year. Okay,
noted. But you see how much dead debris
is all over the place. I don't know how
much of this bigger stuff I'm going to
get into, but this area is just riddled
with it. So the the rotary cutter could
handle all the small stuff. But like
this tree, this tree is basically dead
and it's covered with Oh, man. Is that
kudzu?
Oh, buddy. I don't
I don't think this is kudu. It's too
small for kudzu. Okay. Well, it's some
type of vine.
Could be wrong, but anyh who, I'm going
to try and clear this out. As you can
see that there's there's an opening in
the canopy right here. So, if this could
start growing grass, maybe put some
wheat down or something to um just give
deer some extra food
and that would be great. All right, so
this limb that I'm getting into, yeah,
this is taller than I am. So, rotary
cutter would be a no-go. Definitely.
It's not really showing up. Definitely
not. But this is all just
nothing. There's no value here. There's
no value. Well, may maybe shade cover
for the uh uh local small stuff.
But yeah, so right right in between that
dark spot and that light spot is kind of
like a land bridge that goes over to
another little a high open area. There's
a goalie right there. There's a goalie
right here. They kind of bridge up and
connect. I don't know how far I want to
push off that way, but if I can get all
this cleared, definitely going to be a
win. Ouch.
Stickers.
Thorns. That hurt. Nature gives us some
amazing examples on stuff, right?
Life comes from the sun. Without the
sun, we don't have life here, right?
Where the sun shines, all this is just
exploding. where the sun doesn't shine,
not so much.
I guess the plan of attack is to come in
and start working through this and go
that way. Uh, this was overhanging quite
a bit last year. And I remember I just
chopped the limbs and just let them sit.
So, if we can mulch up these limbs, that
would be a that'd be a fun start.

I
am thoroughly impressed with this thing.
This is like having a rotary cutter,
chainsaw,
and a stump grinder all in one as far as
doing doing stuff out in the woods. So,
a chainsaw. You don't necessarily have
to mulch the entire tree if you don't
want to mulch the tree, but you can
definitely take it down very easily with
this and then move the top of the tree
somewhere else and then use it like a
stump grinder to mulch whatever is left
behind.
You can do that. You can, of course, do
anything that a rotary cutter can do. It
just it just mulches everything. I am uh
I'm thoroughly impressed. Um, to be
quite honest with you, I was a little
bit hesitant about going to this
particular size for this particular
tractor. There's two different options
that would fit my tractor as far as
having 35 horsepower, 30 29 12 PTO
horsepower, and this one, like I said
earlier, is on the larger side of that
scale. Uh,
but it it handled everything just fine.
It really did. uh the stuff that it you
know I I killed the tractor twice and
that's because I mean I shouldn't have
been in that kind of stuff to begin
with. That's when I started moving stuff
with the grapple uh bigger logs and down
trees and whatnot. But I I don't I
couldn't tell you how many trees I took
out. There's
look I mean just look at this. It's it's
insane
how much work was done in just a few
hours. All right. And so the original
trail comes through here where the side
by side is and it wrapped around this
trail or trail this tree and went
that way. Okay, there's just a little
bit and this was like a wall of just
gross vegetation, vines and briars and
nothing really valuable. And now I mean
I don't know how many trees I took down,
saplings, bigger stuff.
Um, of course you can mulch this up even
more fine if if you wanted to do that.
You could even mulch that big old
monster if you wanted to. Take you a
while, but theoretically it could be
done. Um, this is just so much so much
instant gratification. So, this is so
cool. I didn't realize how much real
estate was right here that's just nice
and open and and nice and flat. Um, this
is going to do several things. Number
one, it's going to promote some grasses
to grow back and and if the vines take
it over, well, I'll, you know, tidy it
up with a rotary cutter or whatever. Um,
I I'm contemplating leaving this tree or
taking it down. It's kind of in the
middle of this area, but it's a nice
little shade spot. Uh regardless though,
when I cleared this out, got off the
tractor, and looked around,
I couldn't help but think that somewhere
right around here,
there should be a cabin.
There should be a cabin somewhere.
Let me back up just a little bit over to
this side over here.
The creek is over there. You can almost
hear the creek. There's a land bridge
going over to that other green plateau
area that that's all rotary cutter
stuff. Easy stuff. But I'm thinking
somewhere right here
is a cabin.
Yeah. Yeah, there's a cabin here
somewhere.
Got all the vines out of this big big
tree right here. This looks like a
willow oak, I think.
Uh, that limb needs to fall. Of course,
I can't get to it just yet.
But this is the trail. This is one of
the main trails coming through here that
we take to the creek. Now, we have
really good access. Let me turn back
around.
And oh man, this is so cool. I mean, it
all just looked like this gross
overgrown nothing or other.
Nice.
[Music]
It's going to be interesting to see how
long these cutting edges last. Um,
they're dished out on the inside just a
little bit and they're circular. So,
essentially you can rotate this twice to
get three different cutting edges. Uh if
you take into consideration say the
first third of the circle is impacting
as you make a cut or as you mulch then
that gives you three different
sections
uh that will are effective at actually
cutting. Not necessarily four sides like
a you know like a carbide tip on a a
helical head planer or something like
that. Those are square four sides. I
think this is recommended for three
different cutting edges. However, I did
a tremendous amount of work with the
factory edge, and I've already played
around and tested this out. Just a
little bit. Not a lot, but just a little
bit uh a couple days ago before it
rained on me. But it's interesting. It's
going to be interesting to see how long
that these last. Um curious uh curious
about that just to see
what the cost is to keep this thing
operational.
