Ladies and gentlemen, this is Joe's Classic Video Games back with another really cool
arcade game video for you this evening. This is Capcom's famous X-Men Children of the Atom.
Check it out. This was one of the CPS2 games that were kitted into all kinds of cabinets back in
the day. You saw these all over the arcades. There was about 10 different games that were very
similar and this is the X-Men one. So we'll play it a little bit here in a minute and you can see
what you think. I always consider these very similar to like Marvel vs. Capcom but I think
this may have been one of the first ones actually before Marvel vs. Capcom. This came out in 94.
I don't know when Marvel vs. Capcom made it out but they're all kind of similar. They just have
different characters and a few little different things but we'll check it out a little bit here
and you can see it. This is a cool cabinet. It's got an interesting thing on the control panel.
I'll show you here in a second. It's still got the side art and again this is a kit cabinet
so there would have been other games in this at one point which we'll talk about here in a minute.
X-Men Children of the Atom. If you look carefully in the background there's like this
diamond plate pattern. That's what the control panels originally looked like on these CPS2 games
and Magneto there has faded a little bit. He would have been more like his usual red self
originally. On this side it's the same. Like I said this is a CPS2 game. Capcom had their
CPS2 system where you could buy new kits that had an A board. There's a B board that came with it
and you swapped it out and you could change some of the art and change that one part of the board
and it was a little more affordable and you could easily change games into new Capcom CPS2 games.
This one here like I said it's a kit cabinet but it's in really nice shape. It came out really nice.
We're proud of it. Control panel is a little faded and it's the wrong one but other than that
everything else looks pretty good. You can check out the artwork up here. Got Cyclops doing his thing.
X-Men Children of the Atom and then of course you have to show off Wolverine. Everybody loves
Wolverine. Now it's got this bezel which came with it originally and you got some of the
bad guys here and bad girls. Magneto, Wolvie, Storm. Is it a Psylocke? Is that her name? Cyclops.
Down here of course you know Street Fighter 2 had been out for quite a while by the time this
came out and Super Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 Alpha. So they already had the fighting
you know the layout of the buttons and stuff already normalized. Guard you know you guard
just like in Street Fighter. To throw if you're near somebody and you hit medium or strong you
throw them that's from Street Fighter. Dash you tap the lever twice. Be back somebody's calling me.
Okay so before I was so rudely interrupted you can dash by tapping the lever twice.
That's in most of the CPS2 games. Super jump quickly move the lever from down to up and you
do this big huge jump or the jump way up in the air. Safe fall and counter through. When thrown
by an opponent press down and all three punch buttons or maybe that means any of the punch
buttons. X power will be consumed and then X power use special move to build up your X power.
Power builds up even when your attack hits. X ability. Ultra power that can be used by drawing
on the X power. Hyper X secret fighting skills that can be used when the power aura is fully
glowing. Now all this stuff right here is where I always got completely lost in Street Fighter
where in all of these I never had the mental capacity to memorize all of that stuff.
So I just mash buttons people. That's what I'm going to do. If you don't want to just see me
mash buttons you might want to turn it off now. Capcom, Marvel Comics, X-Men, Magneto and all
likenesses thereof are trademark and copyright 1995. Marvel Entertainment Group Incorporated,
All Rights Reserve, 95. Capcom USA Incorporated. So this is one of those games that I guess they
designed in 94 but it didn't come out in America until 95. Now this control panel is interesting.
Like I was saying this is a kit cabinet where it was different things. Can any of you tell what
game this control panel is from? It says Data East which is definitely not Capcom.
And then you've got fist attacks and kick attacks and then you've got you know crouch,
defensive crouch, move forward, move back, jump forward, jump back, jump up. Look when they did
the uh when they did the kit they weren't thinking they put this one over here but this says
move forward by going left so this one should be here and this one should have been here because
it says move forward by going that way. Just little things folks. But anyway that is from
Data East had a game called Fighter's History which was a complete ripoff of Street Fighter 2
where they basically got sued over it by Capcom. So it's kind of ironic that some operator at some
point converted this cabinet into a Fighter's History, a Data East Fighter's History. Capcom
sued Data East over it and then at some point in the future this same operator converted their Data
East Fighter's History game into a Capcom, an official like a referee with a whistle Capcom
fighter. But it's certainly an interesting look. It's very similar to the Street Fighter
2 control panel overlay. It's got the same flecked paint look. It shouldn't be yellow, this is all
old so it's the clear coat, the clear layer that's on the on the overlay they yellow with
time so they get like that. But originally that would have been more of a gray more like you see
here which is a again a ripoff of the Street Fighter look. But because of that it looks kind
of at place on this cabinet even though it is the fake Street Fighter game. So there you go I'll set
up the tripod we'll play it a little bit. I'm not great at this game but we'll we'll play through it
a little bit and you can see what you think. Be right back. Alright folks so I don't know what
the auto mode is. Maybe if there is a Street Fighter X or X-Men Children of the Atom expert
in the room maybe they could let us know what the auto mode is. I'm not sure about that one.
So they show all the good guys and they show all the bad guys. Now when you get when you beat all
of the playable characters you fight Juggernaut and then you fight Magneto at the end of this.
Or so I've heard because I've never been there. And I'm probably not going to get there right now
but we'll try it out. What do you think? Woovie or Cyclops? We'll do Cyclops.
Oh there's the automatic mode. I'm not going to try that.
I wonder if I can just do cheap stuff the whole time.
Switch thing's confusing.
Oh I got beat by a character I don't even know the name of.
It sounds like he's saying Jesus Christ.
Oh.
Yeah I beat the first character one time.
Oh he's got one like that that he does diagonal.
Oh come on.
False people. Consider this to be a warning. Okay gotcha. He looks burnt up. Mega optic
blast. Do all of them and hit all three punches. Okay we'll try Woovie.
Maybe I can beat the first character with Woovie.
Remember his special ones. He's got a tornado claw all right.
Boy he's bad.
I don't know how to do his projectile.
And he may have not had one in this one because uh
I may be thinking about Marvel versus Capcom.
Oh she hit me with the super finish.
Oh man. All right maybe they'll give me a hint here. Throw a hint at me people.
Berserker barrage. So you got to hit all three at the same time.
It said hyper x though so maybe I have to have the uh yeah I have to have more uh
Hmm man.
Some kind of drill thing but I don't know how I was doing it.
All right so I beat Spiral. That's one. Only 10 more to go. Give me another clue people.
Uh-oh.
Oh man.
Man. I guess you can't block missiles. All right give me a clue people. Give me a clue.
Subject eliminated. Minimum force required. That's just pathetic. Counter a throw. Oh come on.
I don't know how to do his spark thing.
Yeah that's how you do it folks.
I'm doing that right now behind the camera.
Round two.
This little this dude man. He's cheating.
Definite cheating. Cheating going on here folks. He cheated.
Oh man. It's cool when you hit them with that but if you miss it's just annoying.
Nice try bub. Uh-oh. Mutant hunting. I think Colossus is going to take it to the house.
Oh man.
That looked painful.
Boy he mad.
Oh and that's that folks. I could play much longer but I'm not going to get much farther.
Don't want to bore you. Super jump. Yeah I already knew how to do the super jump.
So there you go. That is the awesome X-Men Children of the Atom. Now like I said it's
a lot like a lot of the other Capcom games they were making at the time and they were all pretty
good in my opinion. I mean it was kind of during this time that they pretty much perfected these
fighting games I think. There's enough in them that I can't even keep straight everybody's moves
and then there's a lot of characters too. So by the time they got to Marvel vs Capcom 2
it was still in the same vein but it had like over 50 characters in it.
But this was certainly one of their good ones. Probably one of their lesser known ones though.
Everybody thinks about X-Men vs Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom and even Marvel Super Heroes
which was one of the early ones too. So there you go folks. This is X-Men Children of the Atom. Now
by the time you see this this may have flown off to someone else's home. Now we may not even have
