At the moment, we'd like to show you this beautiful Weller soldering iron that we use every day in our videos. The Weller adjustable temperature irons work better than cheaper ones because they attempt to keep the tip at a certain temperature, and are a higher wattage. This helps you get nice solder joints and makes it easy to do repairs.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Joe's Classic Video Games back
with another cool pinball repair video for you this evening.
This is Chicago Coins Moonshot. This belongs to our buddy Rodney.
He had some issues with it and he brought it back to us.
We've worked on this before.
I don't know if we did a playlist of that or not,
but we did work on this one before and fixed it up.
And it is not working now.
So we're going to see if we can get it working now.
I'll bet we can, because if I can't,
I probably won't upload this video.
But that's how that works, folks.
But I'm sure we can fix it.
This thing is actually pretty clean, nice-looking little game,
and it's just one of those unique little Chicago Coin titles, you know,
from the late 60s maybe, something like that.
We'll figure it out, maybe early 70s.
It's just an interesting little game.
Like I said, we did a whole thing
on it before where we worked through it
and played it and everything.
But I can't remember what it's doing.
it just won't start a game or something
and he said that he'd been having problems where he had
to reach in and move the score motor
and if he moved the score motor it would play so that's a
little clue that might be have something
to do with it we're not going to do a complete um where
we work through every little thing in the game
because we've already done that we're just going
to repair it in this video another thing
that we're going to do though is we need to work on
this the head for whatever reason it's loose look
at this now this is going to scare the hell out
of you let me show you first this beautiful back glass now it's
not in perfect shape but it's in
very presentable shape like all the art
that you care about is in good shape right just a nice
looking back glass got that cool look to it
those kind of look like pointy people i just recently
figured out that uh the gentleman that d that did the pointy people
which is a Christian is it
Christiansen we'll look it up here in a second
that he did uh games for everybody he did back
glasses for everybody so i wonder if he did
that one maybe we'll look it up but you see that nice
back glass you don't want to hurt that but look
at this when you move this thing the whole freaking
head moves look over here too and someone has
put nails in this side of it that's scary as hell
so the head is coming apart so we're going to glue that clamp it
and uh i guess put the nails
back in it there's they're already in there
so why not this side does not have nails so we'll
just glue like it does it's got a couple we'll glue
the crap out of it too um that bottom piece
there is particle board yeah i don't know
if this is just a nice original shape or somebody's
repainted a bunch of stuff on it i guess it's all original
um you've got the overspray on it you
know they did that whenever they did the stencils at the factory
also you've got the the um webbing
on it that's a cool thing we haven't mentioned
in a while if you're a new reviewer they did this
neat process at the pinball factories where they used plywood
and it's not cabinet grade or
anything like that it's just cheap plywood
and so what they did was they painted a base coat on
there now the base coat likely wasn't yellow
originally nicotine probably did that so it
would have been more like a an ivory something like
that and when they painted that on there
some of the companies uh they they sprayed this splatter paint on it
and the way that they did
it was they just took a spray gun
and they they turned the pressure down to a certain place where
it just kind of came out streamy like
that and so after they painted it they would take that gun and
just and it would just throw this webbing all over it
and if you look if you like you look at the
green there's no webbing they just did it on the base coat
so they would paint it white and then
spray the webbing all over it
and the reason that they did that was because it hides imperfections
a little bit your eye it plays a little trick
in your eye where you notice that there's a line
there and a line there and a line there
and then you start paying attention to all the imperfections
because the whole thing's like that it's designed like
that so you don't notice um like sometimes
on the plywood they'll have a big uh patch in it
and stuff and you don't it doesn't stick out as
much so that was their idea behind it you don't notice
the grain in it and all that and so it's
a really cool effect and usually if you see one
with that it's original because it's kind of hard
to reproduce people attempt it
but they don't always pull it off not all of the companies did
it like here's a Williams Grand Prix from a little bit later
and there's nothing like that one the
company that did it the most was got them they did it on a lot of them
and did a really good job
so when something's been repainted often that will be gone
and you won't see it so after they did
that at the factory they had these big stencils i guess they were metal
or something that they held
up and then sprayed and in this instance it was two colors
so they had a black stencil and a green
stencil and that gave you that cool looking art
so this is called moonshot and you've got a little
lunar lander there and you've got this lady here
who's uh tethered to it or she's receiving a
signal from it or whatever
and she's in her form-fitting space suit floating around uh the
moon um you know this was still
in the era too where they had kind of suggestive titles so
moon shot you know some people you know
if you moon somebody it means you like you
pull your pants down right
and they've got all these good looking girls with the nice curves
but it wasn't as crazy as it got in the mid 70s
so there's nothing x-rated about it or anything
some of the some of the um the ones
from the the late 70s got pretty risque now here's kind of in
between so here's a girl and this is also a chicago coin
and she's drawn a certain way
got a little more going on than maybe the girl in the other back glass
and uh this girl's very
upset about this guy who seems
to be mesmerized and this guy
what's he looking at and um look
there's the little arcade game over there on the on the back glass too
so anyway we could talk
about uh pinball art forever so this is the same splatter effect
because this is also a chicago
coin probably from around the same era look how unique
this game is that's going to be a real
cool one we'll do that video pretty soon um okay
so the moon shot like i said we got to glue the
back we got to figure out what's wrong with it
so what i'm going to do is i'm going to look inside
it make sure i know he hauled it here
on its uh setting standing up on its legs like this so
probably didn't get too much knocked around
but i'm going to look in it just to make sure there's
nothing crazy in there and we'll look
in the back door make sure there's nothing crazy in there and
then we'll figure out what's going on and took
a glance inside everything looks how we left it
got the schematics right there as well playfield still has
a nice sheen to it cool game and here
is the back box everything looks exactly how we left it
so what i'm what am i looking for
well i'm just looking to see
if um there's something obvious like a dead rat in the bat
that ate a bunch of the wires
or uh there's a hammer laying inside of it that somebody decided
to stash in the pinball machine
and all that i know the gentleman that owns this one so
not likely to anything like that's going to happen
but i always check just to make sure
so when you turn it on nothing shorts out okay
so let's try to turn her on look how cool these are
like they kind of hang over that's unique they're
real thick too plastics are big anyway let's turn
it on and see if anything happens nothing
not a thing oh you know what i don't have the power on
i should go turn the power on to that plug
that's something we could mention real quick too
we do repairs so a lot of these are not working properly
a lot of them are really old old juke
boxes things like that so when we leave
at night we turn off most of the power we don't turn off
the security system and stuff like that and most
of the lights we leave on the power to the lights
we leave on but all of these outlets in the walls
for this entire place and this is just our
workshop here it's not even our workshop it's
the front of our workshop on the other side we've got
like 50 games we turn every freaking one of those outlets off
when we leave because we don't want to
leave anything plugged in in case there's
a problem now usually there's not a problem we've never had
a problem but we also always turn off
the power just make sure there's no problem that way you
don't have to worry about it
so if you've got something old like this if you're not familiar
with it now if you know for sure that when
the power comes in it goes through the switch and
then goes to the transformer
and so if you turn that switch off the transformer has no power
um or it's a modern game
and you know that there's a fuse on the input and like a new Stern
pinball or a new Jersey Jack pinball those are going
to be fused everything's cool but on these
old ones these really old ones i don't leave them turned
on i mean i don't leave them plugged in or
anything yeah you could turn them on and just have
the ambient light on and everything but um if
you're going to be away for a while i unplug all that stuff
so here at the shop we turn on
everything so right now i've got the power turned off to this room
so i'm gonna go turn it on real
quick all right power's turned on let's see
if that changes anything nothing oh there we go got
some lights on at least this is a really good
looking game it's just a you know they were
brave enough to make it brown like it just has
a it looks different than a lot of the other ones
all right so everything lights up um the ball
is still in the out hole let's see if pressing start
gets us anywhere well i fixed it rodney come get it
no apparently like i said oh look game over
and nothing works um and apparently like i said he's
been having a problem with the score motor
turning so let's let's watch that again if i hit the start button
so it went to ball and play
and then immediately back to game so what
do you think it is folks what would make it do that so
you saw it left game over went to ball and play
and then went immediately back to game over so
that's our clue so let's get the schematics out
and see if we can figure this out so these are
the schematics a lot of these schematics
are available online you can go to the internet
pinball database and they'll have a lot
of these if they don't have them you can get them from
the pinball resource pbresource.com will sell you
a nice big copy of these they've got about
every schematic that we that's known to exist
and in particular the Gottlieb ones you have to buy
them because they are still copyrighted
and they protect their copyright and they don't let anybody
put them online basically
so if you if you need yours everybody gets all upset about that but
the game originally came with one right
so if you need one they've got a replacement that's like
twelve dollars or fifteen dollars
or something it's this big old sheet and it's a replacement
for a part that's missing from your machine right
so a lot of people get upset about that but it is
what it is they own it
and they they use the money that they make from schematics and stuff to
make reproduction parts like little tiny screws
and stuff that you need for the game so i am all
for it i have no problems with it
but uh some of them you can get on the internet pinball database
this one may be on there um since it's Chicago Coin Chicago Coin
was uh bought out in 1975 or
1976 and turned into Stern Pinball
so Stern Pinball is actually still in business it's not
the exact same company they went through some restructuring went out
of business went bankrupt
and came back but the gentleman running Stern Pinball is the same Stern
or the son of the Stern
that was that bought Chicago Coin
so anyway what i do on these schematics is usually the light will
tell you the story so you saw how it said game over
and then it went to ball and play and then
it went back to game over i've mentioned
that three times now the reason i made such a big
deal of that about that is because if you look
on the schematics here's the game over light so this
was on and the only way for that to be on this side
is connected to the uh transformer and then
this side has to be connected to the light bulb
So the only way for that is if the game over relay
is on. So this is drawn as if the game has started.
Sometimes it will tell you. Let's see here.
Sometimes it will tell you like how it's drawn.
I don't see it on this one. But the way this is
drawn right now, you can see that the light doesn't have power
because this relay isn't over there
So clearly the game over, the game is not over
It must be in gameplay. That's why it doesn't say
game over so when the game is over this switch will be connected
so we are starting the game
and that's turning off which means this is coming unconnected
because the game over relay must be
turning off or resetting or whatever it does
and the little switch is connecting over here and then
it's saying ball in play that's exactly what's happening on ours
so and then it goes back to
game over so we must have some kind of problem
that's tripping the game over relay it must be
off it must come off when I hit start
and then go back on so we need to figure out why is the
game over relay tripping you can see
that that's actually normal the light part is actually normal
behavior it's coming out of game over bam
and it's going right back into game over right here
in the middle of the schematic you can see
the game over relay now if you look there is a little
switch right in front of it what
that's showing you whenever it has that is that that is a relay
that drops so basically once that relay pulls
in it stays pulled in usually this is on a relay bank
where they reset a whole bunch of the relays
so this one gets reset and then whenever it gets
tripped that switch opens
so whatever power is feeding it is no longer feeding it and it does
just just so that it doesn't hold the whole time it just falls right
and there will be other ones
on here like for instance the start relays do it as well etc etc
but we're having a problem where
the game over relay is tripping as soon
as the game starts now what causes that to trip well
there's only a few things the lock relay can do it
so if the lock relay uh lets out so that
i think this is drawn with the power off it looks like
to me i wonder they don't really show us do
they don't really show if it's plugged
in or not but if the lock relay uh has there's a switch on
the lock relay if that's connected it will trip
the game over relay usually the way that works
is the lock relay is on the entire time
that the game is on and with it on if this is drawn
in gameplay that switch will be open
which makes sense because if that switch was closed
you'd always be in game over right so that must only close
when the lock relay turns off now the
purpose of that would be let's say that you're playing a game
and you get the ball two and then
you just stop your game and turn the game off
when you turn it back on it would be right where
you left it if not for this switch
because what's going to happen is the lock relay is going to turn
itself off because there's no power
and make that switch connect and then when you turn the game
back on power will come through
and immediately turn you into game over that's the purpose that
usually so we got to check that one the score frame vibration switch
so that's in the back box
there's a switch back there that if it connects it would throw you
into game over and it could be
that that thing's stuck and so as soon as this resets it kicks back
because that vibration switch
is stuck now it wouldn't do it immediately you saw ours turns
a little bit but that's because
of this switch here this is a score motor switch it's
not going to be connected the whole time
while it's turning there's going to be a point
when that's not connected and when it gets back
to where that is connected bam maybe that's
when it's doing it because if you notice there was a
little bit of delay between when it said game over
game over balls played and then back to game over
and then a play field vibration switch
so there's a switch under the play field if it touches
it'll also throw you into game over
those are for just they're just anti um it's not really a tilt
thing i think they call it a slam switch usually it's
in case somebody's abusing the game now
at some point people figured out that if you kick
the hell out of the coin door you could
theoretically kick it hard enough that the coin switch moves
and gives you a free credit
and if it doesn't kick it again
and if it doesn't kick it again right so this is designed so that
you don't do stuff like that uh
because it's going to throw it into game over and you know
screw you all up and it got more advanced
as time went on they eventually got to where
um it uh it would you know turn the whole machine off for a few seconds
and things like that so
where you couldn't possibly get a free credit
um and you might think well nobody's going to do that
the hell they won't if this is in some place
that's not imagine this being in the bus station
right and there's a woman back there behind the counter
and then there's a bunch of 17 18 year
old kids over here beating the hell out
of the pinball machine what's she really going to do
right so i mean unfortunately people do do stuff like
that so they had to design systems to try to
make it where you wouldn't do that okay
um so the other thing that can trip the game over relay
is when the game is actually over
and the way that they tell that the game is over
is uh by the ball count unit
so if the ball count unit uh is on ball number one the game's not over
right so if it's set on three ball
when the ball count unit gets to ball number four it will trip
the game over relay if it's set on uh five ball
when the ball count unit gets to switch six uh
ball six it will trip the game over relay
so it could be that maybe the ball count unit's not
resetting if this is on you know it got up
the ball count six and then um will not reset it's
stuck, as soon as the game started,
it would throw it back into game over. My guess is the
lock relay screwed up. That's my guess. So we'll see.
So let's look at the score frame vibration
switch first. That should be an easy one to find.
They're calling this the score frame. There should
be a vibration switch here somewhere that should not be closed.
Do you see one? What is this? What
is that? That's one and it ain't closed.
It ain't even close to close. It looks like somebody,
probably me, bent it all out last time.
So that's not that one. So let's lift up the playfield and
see the playfield vibration switch.
So here is the playfield anti-cheat, anti-vibration switch.
And you can see it's vibrating, but it ain't even close to touching.
Again, I probably bent it out
of the way last time.
Okay, so next up, the ball count unit is right here.
So you can't tell. I
couldn't, I didn't see what number was lit up on the ball unit.
Let's see if this is resetting or
if i can step it up some more so that one ain't
doing nothing that might be it that is it that's
it i was wrong it's not the lock switch okay
so this is the one that resets it and it is all
gummed up like it did not want
to move i wonder what happened there maybe i didn't clean that
i'm gonna have to go back and look at the other video
and see why i didn't mess with the ball
count unit because that's the obvious problem
so the problem was it was at ball six and during the
startup it tries to pull in to reset this and couldn't
because it was stuck so i just did it
very firmly really had to push on it to get it to go down
and it slowly reset so that whole thing
needs rebuilt we're going to have to look
at the bonus units too um so that stepper that stepper
that stepper that stepper that stepper
and this stepper to make sure that they're all right maybe
i cleaned some and i didn't clean others
so i'm gonna go look at the video and see what all i did
i knew it like i always get his name mixed up
with the other guy is so this is christian
Marchet he's the guy we did we've talked about him
in a bunch of videos he's the pointy people
guy or one of the pointy people guys there's another one
that he copied basically um i won't
go all back over that we've done it before
but look him up if you haven't so uh christian Marchet
did do the art i looked at the videos that i had made
of this game before and the whole thing was
i didn't do the game basically our buddy rodney bought it somewhere
and he had picked it up and
it worked but it just had some issues
so in the videos we worked through the issues we didn't go
through and clean everything
and do the usual stuff that we do um so i did read and the problem
that we had on the previous time was the coin unit
and the uh player unit in the back box and it was
the same deal it was kind of gummed up he'd cleaned
i took them all apart and fixed them and that's
that so i need to make sure the bonus units are all right
and we definitely need to rebuild this
ball uh this ball ball count unit
so that's our thing the guy christian that i'm talking about
let me show you him so you'll see what i'm talking
about there's two guys that i always get their name
mixed up because they have christian in both of their names
so this is Christian Marche, he did
all the pointing people and lots of uh ems he
also did some uh some really cool stuff once we moved
into the like the solid state era he did a few there too
so this is the gentleman i always get
him mixed up with Dave Christensen uh
in order he did um fireball uh rogo air aces wizard
he did the art on wizard that's a big deal uh spirit
of 76 old chicago captain fantastic
Matahari Bobby Orr's Power Play six million
dollar man dolly parton future spa nitro ground
shaker fireball 2 and we'll stop there
but yeah he was like a big deal um one hell of a talented
artist so i always get the two of them confused
the other gentleman came before him and did did
more of the pointy people stuff
that was a little more comic book style um this was a little more
realistic photorealistic well not it's
also comic book style but it's just a different vibe so
anyway you get the point okay
so i took it off cleaned it put it back i oiled the little armature
here on the back one two three four five it all
steps up good i guess actually that first position
is ball one ball two ball three ball four ball
five ball six working good now so we'll leave it
all the way up just to make sure that it resets it
at the beginning of this of the setup and then
the coin unit the player unit i had already done
this is the match unit it's working too
i guess it's not i guess it's the match you know it's like
the zero to 90 unit which is going to
be involved with um the match and if there is a match
and the um anything random that they need
in number four okay
and then the bonus units unfortunately were also sticky so i got them
doing their thing um that was probably the whole thing i'm curious
though about the score motor i
wonder if it does that a lot or if it just did it once
so we probably need to play it and just see
if the score motor sticks
but the first thing i'm going to do is go ahead and glue the back box
because that's going to take probably a day to dry
so we've got some big long clamps i'm just
going to squirt some glue down in the crevice there
on both sides clamp the crap out of it
and let it sit for a day and that should fix
that um i don't know if there were always nails in it
i guess there were if you look right there that's a nail
and it's under the the paint so i guess
originally it had nails and it had glue
so we'll put some glue on it and then we'll put some nails
in it all right so i uh glued the back box i've got a clamp on it
and uh we'll see i guess you
can't see the clamp there's a clamp
on it you can barely see it uh we'll see if it there's any
obvious flaws in the gameplay okay now
these are the bonus units and if you look 100s lit up on
that one 500s lit up on that one
so that must be how those two work they move forward and so it's
constantly moving those as you go over the moon rocket
and the venus rocket score so they don't
actually reset they just keep going that's pretty cool all right
so the game started up as you can
see it says one player and it says ball
and play one remember we left that on uh six balls let me
move it bam now
these are the little two
inch flippers i believe he
i believe he adjusted it
more flat to make the flippers stronger he didn't he didn't like
the weakness of the two inch
flippers it's just a thing
though we put on the one of the previous videos we put a a stronger
coil on it on the flippers the red dot coils uh we're still in ball
and play number one
so that is not working properly um we gotta
figure that out um so uh we put the stronger
flipper coils on it but still you know they're pretty weak
so you can see the left bonus unit
definitely moving up ball and play number two
right one's moving up left one's going okay so
it seems like the bonus units are moving just fine look
at these little gates on the outside
still ball and play number two
and we're still on player one by the way we haven't moved off of
player one there's ball and play number three did you hear
the metal kiss whenever i shot it
because the rubber shooter
tip is deteriorated ball
and play number four okay
so see it's still
ball and play number four
so it's not advancing every time
like it should still ball and play
number four still
ball ball and play
number five okay
and that advanced it
to ball
and play number
six which put it in game over
so that's how it's supposed to work okay so we've got an issue where
it's not advancing from one ball to the next
so we need to look at the schematics and figure out
why that is i mean it is usually but it isn't always okay
so it's back to the schematics so
when the ball lands in the out hole in the out uh lane where
the ball goes in the out hole it hits
the let's see if i can find it here well i just
had it here we go it hits the out hole switch
there's two of them
so when it does that it turns on the out
hole relay okay out hole relay if it's
not the last ball the last ball will
not be on and nothing happens on this switch as of this now
it does other things you know maybe it counts down a bonus
or whatever who knows but eventually it
kicks the ball out now when it kicks
the ball out it rolls through the trough and it hits the switch
halfway through the trough okay and that is called
the playfield ball return switch so when it hits
this playfield ball return switch you might have
noticed whenever it counts from ball one to ball
two ball two to ball three it does it as the after
the ball has shot out but before you have seen the
ball it's still under the apron that's
because it's hitting that switch when it hits that switch
it turns on the ball count relay okay now the ball
ball relay closes this switch so this switch
is closed then this switch is closed on the score motor
the extra ball relay has not been pulled in
if the extra ball relay was pulled in then this switch would be open
and that would prevent the
ball would kick out and it would prevent it
from stepping up to the next ball which is kind of what
ours is doing so that switch we need to look
at and then as long as the first ball relay has been
dropped so what's that mean well if you if you have shot
the uh ball out into the play field and
you didn't score any points the first ball relay
would never have came on and it would just shoot
the ball right back out and they do that for a whole bunch of reasons
but so uh if that switch
is dirty and not making good contact that would
also break this little thing now remember it's
usually working or it's half the time it's working half
the time it isn't so it's one of these is
very close it's it's touching or something
but it's not clean or something like that and then
it goes to the player control relay
so the player control relay has to do with how many people are
playing so right now of course we've got one person playing
so what will happen is at the end
of the ball the player control relay comes in it goes down to here
and so this will connect and the
reason that they do that is because they want
to reset the player control unit back to one
and they don't want the player control unit to step up
so if you're playing a two-player game
at the end of the first ball of the first player it will
do this instead because it wouldn't go to
ball two it would stay on ball one
and it needs to move the player up to player two so we do that
but since we're a one-player game
or if it was at the end of the second player's first ball the
next time through this player control relay would pull
in and it would reset the unit back to player
one so we player one player two whenever at the end
of player two ball this would come in and it
would reset the control unit back to player one
at the same time that it does that so it resets
the player control unit at the end of each ball
if you're only a one player game so when it does
that the power comes through here
and it goes through a switch on the number two start relay
well this is another thing if that switch is screwed up
or dirty you might get the same problem
right or if this switch where it connects here
is dirty you might get the same problem any of
these switches could cause this issue uh
but through all of this it steps the ball count unit
up so this isn't always happening
so it could be this switch is dirty or flaky it could be this
switch is dirty or flaky this relay is coming
in because if it wasn't we would see the player
control unit step up and it's not like we never go to player two
but it could be this the connection
on this switch when that switch is over
so it could be that one it could be that one it could
be that one it could be that one um or it could even be this one
or it could even be this one
so we got one two three four five six different switches
that it could be and you
sometimes you get an extra clue where it makes it easier to to see
but if you played it enough
you might figure it out but probably not all
with six different switches so if it is on the last
ball that means the last ball relay is pulled
in and so that time you're not going to shoot across
the shooter lane under the apron
so this ball count relay is never going to come in because
the ball it's never going to kick the ball out
because you're done right so but it needs the
ball count unit to step up
so this time it does it with the last ball relay so if that's down
a separate switch on the out hole relay connects through the same stuff
and that's what steps you
from ball five to game over that last one
if you had it set on three ball it would do that at the
end of ball three okay so i'm going to look at these six switches
and see if i can see one that
looks a little weird
but like i said uh it's working usually now on this game we have had
problems with the score motor remember he said
that it doesn't always get back to where it's
supposed to it doesn't always get back to its home position
or whatever so that might be a good one
to look at first and it says a three i believe okay
so i think i figured something out so when
the ball crosses this switch that's what steps it up okay
so we're on ball one and i gotta score
something or hit this rollover switch in the out lane
to get the first ball relay to drop so that
is dropped and it will stay dropped
the whole game i checked all those switches that we're
talking about i didn't see anything obvious okay
so we're on ball one theoretically if the ball
lands in here and it does its thing it's going
to kick the ball out over that switch so when it
hits that switch it's going to turn
on the ball count relay we already talked about that the ball
count relay is what actually trips
the player control relay there's the switch right there
and it does that depending on where the player control
is the unit in the back and the coin
unit so the coin unit if there's one coin two coin three coin
or four coins in it determines when
this relay comes in to reset everything
but the the ball count unit makes that happen and the
switch makes the ball count unit happen right
and then we just talked about it closes this switch
if the extra ball relay hasn't been tripped i checked
that switch it looks fine if the first
ball relay is tripped i checked
that you just saw it trip i checked it it's fine and if the player
control relay pulls in which is what we were just talking about up here
when the player control relay
pulls in it will send power through
and the number two start relay if that switch is connected it is
i checked it it makes the ball count step up unit work okay
so all you have to do is hit that switch
and it should advance to the next ball okay
so watch what happens so i'm gonna i'm just gonna
hit it with my finger you don't think it'll zap
me maybe i shouldn't hit it with my finger okay
all right so you heard that right ball
in play number two do you hear that noise that's the
player control relay stuck on okay so if i hit it
now nothing happens okay now if i just turn the
score unit the score reel
the player control relay has now went off okay i'm gonna hit it again
nothing we're still on ball number two
and when i hit that switch nothing happens let's move this
one more so what i'm doing is i'm going
from home position to home position if you look on this
bottom cam there is a indention right there
that all of these switches are riding in and that's
the home position. There's three of them on it.
One there, one there, and one there. You can see
on this top one, it's a little easier to see.
There's three little bumps, and then there's three
little bumps, and there's three little bumps.
And you'll notice each time it turns, it only turns a
third of a revolution. And you'll
also notice that this is made out of plastic. Okay, so we just
turned it one third of a turn.
It moved us up to three.
The thing is stuck on again, and now if I
hit it nothing happens okay if i hit was to hit
this again it's turned that off i remember last
time it turned that off this wouldn't work still
won't work let's turn it again no all i'm doing
is turning the score reel score relay score a motor
so if when i do that it should be in the
exact same spot you know there's three home positions
and i just went from home position
one to home position two
it worked and once again
that's stuck on so what's
the deal i mean what's
what's going on so the problem i've got
is every time i hit that ball return switch the ball count
relay should come on and it's
not sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't if this one is stuck on
it definitely doesn't so what the hell is going on there
so i have checked this you would think
that the obvious thing would be that it's this b6
this is b6 that switch that allows the ball
return relay to stay on or to come on and you can see
as this turns that it is very closed
Well, I don't know.
Hell, maybe it is sometimes, and sometimes it isn't.
Damn, that's kind of wide, actually.
Yeah, let me adjust that a lot closer.
All right, so that's closer, which means that whenever it's closed,
theoretically it'll be closed tighter.
But you have to resist the urge to just make it as tight as possible
because it also needs to open.
It's important that that opens so that that relay turns off.
And the other relay, the D4, which is right here,
the player control relay is definitely getting stuck
on and if that switch opens it should turn
off so you can see right there that that switch is open okay
so this doesn't really have anything
to do with our error or whatever
but i'm just going to show you how this is designed it's a
little bit sloppy the best i can tell okay i might be wrong
but that's how it looks to me
so that thing is sticking on that player control relay okay
so but i think it's supposed to on a
one-player game because just
because of the way they've designed it okay so out hole switch the
ball falls in the out hole during the gameplay okay it turns
on the out hole relay which turns
which holds itself on and it'll continue holding itself on until
e1 opens up okay so the out hole
relay is on that starts the score motor
so the score motor starts turning okay so we're over
here i've got all this turned off um the score
motor starts turning okay um when the score motor
gets to C1 the switch
on C1 kicks the ball out
so C1 is right here
so it's gonna be way along
right so it turns and it turns and it turns
and it turns and C1 is down here turns and it gets to
bam right there it just kicked the ball out the ball
is on the on the the way to the shooter lane
The ball travels through the thing,
and it hits the playfield ball return switch.
And I have confirmed that that is the correct switch
because of the wiring and everything.
It hits that, which turns on the ball count relay until B6 opens up.
So it turns on the ball count relay.
When the ball count relay comes on,
because we are on a one-player game,
and we are at the first position of the player control unit,
that switch closes, and it turns on the player control relay.
So we're getting all of that, right?
so all of this happens as the ball shoots across
so it'd be almost immediately after the kicker
kicks it right the score motor is still turning
so now the ball has gotten all the way out to the
the shooter lane and we need it to do its thing
so this one opens up at D4 so D4 is this one up
here so we keep turning the ball is in the it's hit
the switch oh it's turned all of the stuff
on everything's doing its thing and we get there
and this switch opens so when that switch opens
now we have just went past um the home position
though but that's because okay yeah so
we're sitting here okay the ball lands in the out hole
that starts the score motor score motor does
this blah blah blah blah blah
when this one drops in it kicks the ball out bam ball is kicked out
okay takes it a little bit it's traveling it's
traveling it's traveling it hits the switch in the
in the the the lane when it hits the switch
in the lane the out hole relay is no longer on because
it's going to turn off at E1
which is this one up here did it do it already yeah it just turned off
right so it is now turned off the out hole relay
so it's not going to keep this running the only
reason this is still running is because
of this run switch down here on the bottom but by this
point the ball has hit that switch
when it hits the switch it turns on the the ball count relay
so the ball count relay is going to keep this running again
so you get back to home position
but it doesn't stop because the ball count relay has it going
on so it keeps going right and now
it needs this one to drop out and it just did
so almost immediately after home that one drops out
but the ball count relay is still on because this switch is closed
so it turns and turns and now
this is energized again or has you know has the power on one side
because the ball count relay
hasn't dropped out yet so then we turn a little bit
and now the ball count relay drops out so it's
no longer holding the score motor on but this damn thing
is still energized it turned off and then
back on because just the way it's timed right
and it'll keep turning and turning and turning and
turning and eventually it gets back to the home position
and stops and that's still energized now
if it wasn't a one-player game it would
be different let's say it was a two-player game
well if it's a two-player game this would have been here
and you would have been at the second
player and at the end of the second player's ball ball one it does
the exact same thing but whenever
this dropped out or whenever this uh did
its thing where it is supposed to step up the ball count
thing the ball count um instead of it would have uh reset
the player control unit right so it would
have done this and when it reset
and ours is resetting the player control unit too but ours
is staying right here because it's already it's only
at the first position so it resets but it
just stays where it is because it's a one player game
but if it's a two player game the coin unit
would be here and so when that reset you would
no longer have a way to get power through here
and so the ball count relay still being on would
not turn this back on so that's going to lock on
after every damn time that this resets on a one-player game,
and that's probably why it's buzzing so much
because the thing's been heated all to hell for years.
If you play a one-player game, that thing turns on and stays on.
Now, it will turn off as soon as the score motor turns.
So as soon as you hit something
on the play field that turns the score motor
or the ball lands back in the out hole,
it'll turn it off whenever it turns the score motor.
But that's a weird design.
I was talking to somebody just the other day.
they were asking me a question about a Gottlieb game
that's kicking the ball kicker twice.
And I was telling them, I was like,
they're not all designed like perfectly efficient.
Sometimes it does extra crap like this.
Now, when you're normally playing the game,
you would never know that that damn thing is sticking on,
and it doesn't really matter.
But, you know, I'm trying to figure out what's going on,
and that's one of the symptoms I noticed.
And it looks to me like it's working how it's supposed to work
on a one-player game.
So I hope some of you followed that and thought it was interesting.
but uh my whole what it all comes down to is when i hit
that switch every time the ball count relay
should step up and it doesn't
so there's something going on right here or with that connection to
there or something like that so that thing where i
was saying every time that's stuck on it won't
do it that's some kind of red herring that has nothing
to do with what we're looking okay so
remember i adjusted this switch
because it didn't look like it was touching very well
so i need to drop the first ball relay make sure
you scored something and now here out of the one
stuck on still stuck on still stuck on still stuck
on okay so i think it was just that switch was
gapped a little bit too high all right folks we've
got everything working well on it um i'm trying to
try to multiplayer game just
to make sure everything's all right so this is ball player
two that's why i didn't move that time i wanted
to show you a really interesting little design
uh quirk of this thing these these pop-up caps
are so weird um a lot of these games they just
came up with like some kind of creative stuff
so if you notice these all say 10 points when lit
which means they're one point if they're not lit
and the middle one is lit and you might notice
that now these two are lit somehow how'd
that happen how'd that happen that's kind of weird
and how do we do it again like what's going on with that okay
so i showed you earlier the bonus
units there's a bonus unit for the moon event the moon rocket
and the venus rocket they have this
thing designed so that when you get both of them
on the same color it lights up that deal so enough
you know like if i move this by hitting
this button it got me they get this one got me um
i can cycle through right
so if i get this light to here i don't know if that'll turn anything on
or not yeah that turned on this light
and so the reason i was able to get the blue working by
hitting this is this cycles through that side right
so for instance if that was the cycle up
to yellow and this button does it too right oh yeah
that was where it's out skip that watch this
so it went from there to there like it's just
a the way it's designed i guess i don't want it
being linear but if you get it to for instance yellow
and then you get this one to yellow
it lights up your yellow pop bumpers how cool
is that so we've got the white one up there that's
still not lit up since we got uh i guess it went past
the white one since we got both of these lit
up it lit up the white one
so it's just a neat design it took me a while to figure that out i
was thinking how why can't i light up
those pop bumpers it tells you down here rocket colors
matched light up corresponding colored targets hitting
the left targets when lit opens the left
gate hitting the right targets when lit opens the right gate
so now you've got the ball pretty much
saved except for the middle.
What a cool
design. Just creative and
unique. At the time
they were doing this with every
freaking game. Not Chicago
Coin, just everybody. About every game
that came out had some unique little thing
where on this one you
got to line up the two colors to get things
to light up or whatever.
I always thought that was really
cool how they would come up with a never
ending stream of quirky
little design ideas for it.
all right we'll play a quick game i played a four-player game
so let me make sure everything
resets yes so it looked like our main problem
was um that uh well two switches i guess it
ended up being right see the ball in play down
here i got saved by the gate did you see that
i got saved by the gate again what
a cool feature look all the uh pop bumpers are on
all the lights are on we worked all
the way through it i'm about to say the gate doesn't
reset but it does it's a cool game i think
um it's one of those you never hear anybody that's
clamoring to get this particular title
or anything it's just one of those ones that you don't hear
about very often but it's well designed and fun oh
and we may or may not be level people so
said put the pitchforks down i know how
y'all get about oh it's a drain monster
also keep in mind too that you're better
at playing than i am so it wouldn't do this to you
Look how the lights,
depending
on what you hit,
you can only turn on certain things
if you don't get the other light to move.
So you've got to get stuff on the left side
of the play field to get that one moving
and stuff on the right side of the play field to get that one moving.
Personally, I think the flippers are very strong.
I think Rodney said he didn't get
to play it much, though, after we did that.
All right, let's try another game just to make sure.
Everything is resetting.
There is a match, by the way.
The number that time was 5.
Ball in play one.
So see, we're on both blues, so it gave us that.
Oh, I was playing with it too much.
Sometimes when you're trying to do trick stuff
with
the
ball, it
screws
y'all up.
It's fairly flat,
but I think Rodney had it adjusted that way.
I'd probably hike it up a little more.
He wanted to make sure that the flippers were nice and strong.
So I think he put it kind of flat
so that it doesn't have as much of an incline,
so the ball doesn't roll as fast, so the flippers can't...
The flippers don't have to fight an incline
to get it back up the hill.
folks that's the way
the cookie crumbles cool game all right
so we will add this to our moonshot
playlist so if you don't know about
that we've mentioned it on a bunch of videos now but
we have went through and painstakingly made all kinds
of playlists of all of our arcade games and
pinball machines and tried to put them in all
of the playlists that they belong in so for instance
this one is in just a generic one vintage pinball
machines we've repaired it's also in one that's
called repairing a Chicago Coin Moonshot pinball machine isn't it great
and then there's another
one that's like repairing Chicago Coin, Chicago Coin uh pinball machines
and then there's another
one 1970s EM pinball machines
so there's like all these different um uh playlists that everything
sorts into depending on what the game
is basically it's like it's almost like keywords you know
so we're making it where if if there's a certain thing
that you're interested in perhaps you love
the old Chicago Coin games there's a playlist just
for that and this will be in it so make sure to
check that out on our channel
and we will see you on the next video we've got this Popeye over here
in the corner ominously looking at us
in the darkness Popeye is coming up soon so we'll see
you back for that soon until then have a good weekend
