Hello everyone and welcome back to LearnAmo!
Today I'm with my copy of the kiss by Hayez, because in this video we will talk about
art, in particular all the words related to art and we will also see a series of
adjectives
useful for
describing an artwork, both positive and negative.
Let's begin!
DIPINTO
A dipinto is an artwork that consists of an image on a canvas or a table,
created using colors and a brush. A dipinto can depict
landscapes,
portraits, scenes of life,
dead natures, etc. The colors used, instead, can be
tempera,
oil colors,
acrylic colors. QUADRO
I often receive the question on what is the difference between
dipinto and quadro. Let's find out right now! A quadro is still a dipinto, but with
more specific features.
In short, a dipinto can also be called
quadro, if
it is made on a mobile support and
if it is
enclosed in a frame.
I mentioned it before.
NATURA MORTA. What does it mean? It's a
pictorial representation that
basically represents
inanimate objects, flowers, fruit,
furniture,
dishes, bottles.
My kiss of Aiez, for example, is not a dead nature.
And, in general, dead natures are always very, very
detailed and
realistic, to create a visual order. And the dead nature, in fact, tends to
also celebrate the beauty of everyday life.
TELA. The tela is a frame of
resistant and smooth fabric,
especially linen or hemp, which is stretched on a frame and which constitutes the
support on which to make a oil or tempera painting.
Often, however, the word tela can also be used with a more
extensive meaning, to indicate a real painting.
SCULTURA. Sculpture is a work of art that represents
figures or images
in full or
in relief,
obtained
by modeling or
engraving
materials such as marble, stone, wood, bronze.
ARTISTA. Very simple, an artist is the one who makes works of art. It is
important, as all the words in
"-ista",
referring to
people, also the word
artista is
the same as the singular, both for the masculine and for the feminine.
Be careful, however, if you have to use
the indeterminative article.
In this case it will be an artist, for a man, without an apostrophe,
an artist, for a woman, with an apostrophe.
In the plural, different endings.
Gli artisti, for the masculine, le artiste, for the feminine.
Small grammatical parenthesis.
PITTORE or
SCULTORE. A painter is an artist who makes works of art with
colors on canvas, instead the sculptor is an artist,
obviously, who represents, who makes sculptures.
MUSEUM. I know, this one is also quite easy. It is the place where works of art are collected, but also
other objects of historical interest,
scientific. And, in fact, all these objects are
exposed to the public who wants to see them. The museums can be free or
paid and offer services such as guided tours or even temporary exhibitions.
In fact, what is an ARTE MOSTRA? An ARTE MOSTRA is an event
public or private, during which works of art are exhibited,
generally, based on a particular theme.
So, for example, all the works of art of a certain artist are exhibited,
or works of art of various artists are exhibited, but all of them
combined, in some way, by the same theme, by the same logical thread.
If the exhibition is only
available for a limited period of time, it will be called
MOSTRA TEMPORANEA.
A GALLERIA D'ARTE, instead, is a generally private place, in which
works of art of living or recently deceased artists are exhibited and also sold.
A CRITICO D'ARTE, instead, is a professional who is able to determine the authenticity of a work,
classify it, evaluate it and determine its economic value.
Having said that, let's move on to see how we can
describe a work of art in Italian,
whether we like it, whether we are indifferent to it, whether we don't like it.
But let's start with the positive descriptions.
We can say that
the work is
TOUCHING, that is, capable of provoking a feeling of deep
emotion.
EVOCATIVE or
SUGGESTIVE, that is, capable of recalling images or memories to the mind.
VISIONARY, capable of considering the future in an intelligent,
surprising,
discouraging way, that
surprises or that
amazes
vividly.
IMPRESSIVE, that
excites and amazes.
EXCEPTIONAL,
noteworthy,
considerable for
excellence
achieved.
A MASTERPIECE, that is,
excellent in every aspect.
Or, to make other types of comments, always positive, we can say that the work
STRIKED ME,
TOUCHED ME,
EMOTIONAL,
INSPIRED,
CHASMATED,
FASCINATED,
LEFT WITHOUT WORDS,
SPOKE DIRECTLY TO THE HEART, MADE ME REFLECT.
Instead, for neutral descriptions, that is, when we simply want to make a comment, but without
unbalancing too much in a positive or negative sense,
we can say that the work is
BRAVE or
DELICATE, to say that it gives the impression of being physically strong or weak.
CONTROVERSIAL, if you divide the public's opinion,
DIFFICULT TO INTERPRET, that is, STRANGE,
DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND, but not in a negative sense.
Or, if you want to be a bit
MODERN, FASHIONABLE, FAST-TEMPED, you can use a
NEOLOGISM, to indicate that a work is
PERFECT TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED, you can say that it is
INSTAGRAMMABLE,
the idea is that it is perfect to be photographed and then posted on Instagram, but actually not
necessarily, that is, the idea of something instagrammable is that it is so beautiful that it is perfect to be
PHOTOGRAPHED. Let's move on to negative descriptions, so when we really don't like a work.
What can we say? The work is
INQUIETANTE, that is, it is capable of causing
ANXIETY,
DISTURBANCE, SADNESS or even OFFENSE in someone.
DERIVATIVE, that is, it seems to copy already existing works of art.
AMATORIALE or
DILETTANTISTICA, that seems to be made
by someone who does not have great skills and great
abilities, but who has the first weapons, so a beginner, if we want.
PRETENTIOUS, that wants to appear more serious,
important and of quality,
compared to what it really is. Or we can say, the work left me
INDIFFERENT or
the work did not
TRANSMIT ANYTHING, GIVE ANYTHING,
MADE ME GO CRAZY.
Well, as you may have noticed, the kiss of Haydn is
one of my favorite works, but now I'm curious to know what is your favorite work of art,
write it to me in the comments and
describe it using all these words that we have seen in the video, that we have learned in the video.
Words are an important part of Italian culture,
so they should be studied,
even just to recognize them, if you don't want to use them. And this is the basic idea that pushed us to make our
