The development that Beethoven's 5th Symphony undergoes resembles a "fate motif" of a "hero's journey". From the first movement to the brilliant finale, it conveys the essence of the heroic ideal. It closely resembles the form of a "Bildungsroman", an "educational novel", a heroic tale or heroic novel, which regained popularity as a narrative style in the late eighteenth century. The work is brought to a fulfilling conclusion with a gradual crescendo and increasing orchestration with insistent timpani leading finally to the glowing, victorious finale without pause. A true finale - worthy of a brilliant hero's journey.
