Schubert’s only string quintet for two cellos, composed in September 1828, just a few months before his death, was his swan song in the realm of chamber music. In a manner unique even for him, this work brings together all the qualities of his mature instrumental music: symphonic form, ethereal beauty of sound and dramatic contrasts. The tragedy of a man whose life’s dreams remained unfulfilled lies like a veil of sorrow over one of the most melodically beautiful works of the Romantic period. ‘It is certainly no longer that happy time when every object seems to surround us with a youthful glory, but rather that fateful realisation of the wretched reality, which I endeavour (thank God) to embellish as much as possible through my imagination.’ These lines, written to his brother Ferdinand in 1824, reveal the composer’s fractured view of the world, which he expressed in his letters and poems. The poles between which they oscillate – the illusion of longed-for happiness and the ‘fatal realisation of miserable reality’ – also shape the quintet.
