Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (A rose has sprung) is a 16th century Christmas carol that probably originally had two verses. Its text refers to Isaiah 11:1a EU: "But out of the stump of Jesse's tree a shoot grows, a young shoot from its roots bears fruit". The melody for the text can be found in the Speyer Hymnal (printed in Cologne in 1599). The composer is unknown. The popular text version of the second verse was created by the Protestant composer Michael Praetorius, who wrote a widespread four-part choral setting of the song in 1609. In the Mainz prayer book Cantual, the song is described as "Alt Catholisch Trierer Christliedlein". The oldest transcription of the text was written by Frater Conradus from the Trier area between 1582 and 1588.
Song text:
1. a rose has risen
From a tender root,
As the ancients sang to us,
from Jesse came the way,
And brought a little flower,
in the middle of the cold winter,
probably halfway through the night.
2. the little rose I mean,
Of which Isaiah says,
Brought us alone
Marie, the pure maid.
From God's eternal counsel
she gave birth to a child,
probably half the night.
3. the little rose so small,
That smells so sweet to us,
With its bright glow
dispels the darkness.
True man and true God;
Helps us from all suffering,
saves from sin and death.
4 Praise and honour be to God the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit!
Mary, Mother of God,
be highly blessed!
Who lay in the manger,
who turns God's fences
turns night into day.
5 O Jesus, until the parting
From this valley of yam
Let your help guide us
To the hall of angels,
Into thy Father's kingdom,
where we praise you forever:
O God, grant us this!
The song "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" is one of my favourites. It is wonderful to sing it with others in several voices. The harmonies go straight to the heart, as does the meaning of the text about Mary's innocence and the birth of Jesus.
The flowers were filmed by Simone Schlegel and the video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
