Ludvig van Beethoven, it is very easy to love his music, writing about him seems infinitely more difficult to me. So many pages have been written in my music lexica that I find it difficult to find anything.

So for this piece I choose an incident that made me smile. In Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Volume I, Kassel and Basel 1949-1951, section 1512 reads:

"Through the profession of his grandfather and father, the path of little Ludwig, whose strong musical talent was recognised early on, was also predetermined: 'Since my fourth year, music began to become the first of my youthful occupations', begins the dedication to Elector Max Friedrich of Cologne that precedes the piano sonatas published in 1783. As early as 28 March 1778, he was able to present his "son of 6 years", as it says on the dedication, to the Cologne public in his own concert. (The father is often accused of deliberately misrepresenting his age. One will judge the matter more correctly if one considers that Beethoven had just turned seven a quarter of a year earlier; therefore, there can be no question of the father having wanted to make the little boy two years younger in order to bring him close to Mozart as a child prodigy. However, it should not be forgotten that other age indications on earlier prints also consistently put Beethoven two years younger and that he himself did not know his real age at least as late as 1810, as can be seen from his own handwritten comment on the copy of his Bonn baptismal certificate). Subsequently, friends and relatives of the van Beethoven family took over his musical education."

That's quite astonishing, isn't it? If a child doesn't know his own age... What pressure little Ludwig van Beethoven must have been under if he had to experience such events surrounding him in his early youth! What a lot of peculiarities the pursuit of a "famous son" can produce!

This wonderful landscape was filmed by Christian Schlegel in Rosenlaui, Switzerland, and the video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
