The 55 Haydn sonatas are perhaps the least well-known treasures in the piano repertoire. In them, one can hear Haydn virtually inventing the classical style, from his early, somewhat tentative beginnings, through his bold experiments in the 1770s, to his adventurous late works. As with his somewhat recalcitrant student Beethoven, each sonata is a new exploration, with the element of surprise ever-present. Haydn delights in abrupt transitions, twists and turns, sudden pauses and apparent non-sequiturs. Listening to his music demands constant alertness.
The first movement of the E-major Sonata, with its quick changes, lively rhetoric and sudden emphases – such as the jolting chord with which the development begins – is a prime example of a middle-period sonata. The Andante is a gently sad lyrical piece, mostly in triplets. The final movement is a noble minuet with contrasting trios in the minor, each part of which is inventively varied – no composer loved variations more.
