It was Barzini all along - The Godfather
- “But I didn't know until this day that it was Barzini all along.” - Don Vito Corleone
Emilio Barzini was the first leader of the Barzini crime family after betraying his former boss Giuseppe Mariposa and was the Corleone crime family's main rival during the Five Families War. The Barzini crime family was inspired by the Genovese crime family.
Don Barzini made his debut as a guest at Connie Corleone's wedding. Soon after, he arranges for his partner, drug lord Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, to meet Don Vito Corleone with an offer to join the drug trade for the Barzini and Tattaglia families. Sollozzo, in particular, is hoping to gain access to Vito's political connections.
After two assassination plots of the Tattaglia family, the Corleone and Tattaglia families went to war. Barzini's covert direction kept him protected from the war. After the deaths of Virgil Sollozzo and Mark McCluskey, Barzini encouraged all the families to go to war with the Corleones and sparked the Five Families War. However, Barzini may be seeking revenge for Sollozzo's death.
After the death of his eldest son, Sonny, Don Corleone banned any investigation into his death. Instead, he asks Barzini to help him organize a peace meeting. At this meeting, Don Corleone discovered that Philip Tattaglia, apparently the instigator of the war against the Corleone family, was not the one to direct. Barzini is the mastermind, secretly orchestrating the anti-Corleone alliance.
Barzini's words, when presiding over the Committee meeting, made Don Corleone realize he was the mastermind: "If Don Corleone had all the judges and the politicians in New York, then he must share them, or let us others use them. He must let us draw the water from the well. Certainly, he can – present a bill for such services. After all – we are not Communists."
