The Thunderball film is the fourth installment in the James Bond film series produced by Eon Productions in 1965. Thunderball refers to the SPECTRE organization threatening to destroy an unidentified metropolis in the United Kingdom or the United States (Miami) after stealing two NATO atomic bombs. The ransom offered was £100 million in diamonds. During the search for these two nuclear bombs, Bond went to the Bahamas and met Emilio Largo, the No. 2 character in SPECTRE. Bond is assisted by CIA agent Felix Leiter and Largo's mistress, Domino Derval, and leads to an underwater battle with Largo's henchmen.

Thunderball spent about a quarter of the time filming underwater. It was also the first Bond film to be shot on the Panavision big screen, and ran for over two hours.

Thunderball is adapted from the 1961 Ian Fleming novel of the same name, based on an original screenplay by Jack Whittingham. This is the third and final 007 film directed by Terence Young with a screenplay by Richard Maibaum and John Hopkins.

Thunderball grossed $141.2 million at the worldwide box office, outpacing not only any of its predecessors but also surpassing every of the five subsequent Bond films. Thunderball remains the series' most financially successful film in North America. In 1966, John Stears won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in Thunderball, while production designer Ken Adam received a BAFTA nomination.
