In The Godfather 3, Michael Corleone returned to New York City, using his power and money to build his public image as a man of noble character and status. He ceded the entire illegal operation area to Joey Zasa.
Don Altobello, an old mafia boss, informed Michael that his New York business partners wanted to join the negotiation. At a meeting held in Atlantic City, Michael gave in to the old mafia (mafiosi) with a share of the profits from the casino, but Joey Zasa did not receive any money. Angry with the Godfather's decision, Joey Zasa declared Michael, an enemy, told everyone in the meeting to choose him or Michael, and walked out of the room. Don Altobello rushed after him to try to persuade Joey Zasa.
A helicopter hovered outside the conference room minutes later and opened fire on those present. Almost all of them were killed, and only a few escaped, but they were all connected to Joey Zasa. Michael, escorted by Vincent, a bodyguard, and his trusted boss Al Neri, escaped death. Back in New York, while contemplating a plan of revenge, the Godfather suddenly had a stroke due to diabetes and was hospitalized.
