Cob Construction - a Building Technique from the Earth with Love
In this video, Bryce from Dreamweavers Collective talked about cob, which is a really amazing sustainable, healthy, affordable, and super durable building material. Cob house construction is a building technique using lumps of earth, sand, straw, and water. Cob can build homes, barns, coops, and more.
This technique has amazing potential. The main ingredients for making cob are clay sand and straw so that means that the materials for your walls can cost you almost nothing while also having a really low environmental impact cob walls also provide an excellent thermal mass and if it's built to passive solar principles it can be extremely efficient and cost very little, the walls can store energy from the Sun to keep you warm in the winter while also remaining cool during summer months for us one of the most interesting things. Cob houses are durable and earthquake-resistant. The oldest cob house still stands after 10,000 years of exposure to the elements; thus, even during earthquakes, it doesn't develop cracks. Cob houses are among the best for sound insulation. Cob houses are fairly fire-resistant…These are some of the advantages of building a cob house.
With so much potential. Is a cob house challenging to build? The answer is no; cob construction is simple to learn, and making one for yourself and your family isn't rocket science because it is very easy to build with basic construction knowledge and requires no special tools. A cob house is just one type of earthen housing in which a third of the world's population resides. These construction techniques have been used for decades in many nations worldwide, but they have only started to spread to the United States.
In the end, Bryce discusses how cob work is done with love and passion for nature and the earth. He also prefers natural building since it is so hands-on, especially with cob, where each and every inch of the walls is touched by someone's hands, feet, or other body parts during the building process.
