Restoration of Stoke Hall - The 18th-Century Mansion
The house being renovated in this episode is Stoke Hall, a thirty-room Georgian palace in Derbyshire that is eight miles from Chatsworth House. The Grade II listed structure is leaking and in danger of dry rot, but it's surviving architectural details and historical significance inspire new owners, Steve and Natalie Drury, to bring the home back to its 18th-century splendor. They put in the effort to transform them primarily into residences. Mansions and manor houses are preserved, along with dilapidated pumping stations, churches, and educational institutions. Since the majority of the building has been vacant for some time, renovators may need help with some challenging obstacles.
Dr. Kate Williams and architect Kieran Long also share the history of certain Stoke Hall residents in this episode. For instance, Robert Arkwright, whose grandfather made billions from his inventions during the Industrial Revolution, stayed at Stoke Hall when he outraged his family by eloping with actress Frances Kemble. Although Richard, his older brother, was pursuing the couple, he got there too late to stop the wedding. Fortunately for us, the 6th Duke of Devonshire's pressed flowers were stored in a scrapbook by Frances, the new lady of Stoke Hall. The Duke also invited the Arkwright family to stay at Chatsworth for Princess Victoria's visit in 1832 when she was 13.
The buildings gain a human quality thanks to the research, which places the style and renovations in perspective. Architectural expert Kieran Long places design, materials, and construction in a historical perspective, and historian Dr. Kate Williams studies the individuals connected to the structure. Caroline Quentin visits the sites, narrates, speaks with families, and provides commentary on progress. By the end of the episode, only some projects are close to completion.
