How to Remodel Framing Inside an Old House - Expert Tips
This video shows you How to Remodel Framing Inside An Old House. When problems come to framing, old houses have some special issues. In this video, Matt Risinger, an expert from Austin TX, demonstrates three typical problems before providing fixes. Visit a 150-year-old home that is having a complete renovation as well as an addition to witness the framing issues and Risinger's tips.
Tip 1: You don't need to increase depth, which is frequently a worry in spaces with low ceilings, to give structure and strength. Use LVL in place of conventional wood joists. Similar in strength to solid wood or steel, LVL is a frame material constructed of engineered wood. The 6" LVL joists in this video are joined to the existing joists and have a substantially higher load capacity than ordinary joists.
Tip 2: Use steel without fear. Walls have to be taken down in order to add an addition to this house. Risinger demonstrates how they incorporated tube steel into masonry that was once an outside wall. In addition to being durable, steel is also unaffected by rot and decay like traditional wood supports.
Tip 3: You can add structure to walls without adding depth. In order to connect the kitchen and living room in this home, a load-bearing wall had to be taken down. The load bearing wall was replaced with a combination of three LVLs and steel flitch plates to ensure that the roof is still supported. The strength and support required to replace a load-bearing wall without adding depth are provided by the wood/steel combination.
