Rred Wings make MULTIPLE moves... This has MAJOR implications | Red Wings News
Sep 23, 2026
The Detroit Red Wings have made multiple moves as training camp continues to rage on, Todd McClellan
has finally made some cuts and given us some insight into who is going to make the opening
night roster in just a week's time. We also get some insight from GM, interim GM, Sean Horkoff
and some new moves that the Red Wings have made once again on the management side of things. We're
going to break that all down and the implications some of these moves that they've made have on the
players, the organization, the salary cap, and who will make this opening night roster. We're
going to break that all down in this episode, but before we get into all of that guys, quick
reminder to hit that subscribe button. Thank you so much for allowing us to hit 5,000 subscribers
out here on Red Wings Digest. Your support has been unbelievable, does not go unnoticed. Thank
you so much and we're going to continue to bring you everything to do with the Red Wings here
on the channel. But Mark, let's get right into it. The Red Wings have made some moves. So,
some cuts happening around the league today and a few players have to go through waivers
in order to essentially make those cuts. So, all of these players I'm about to list have to go
through waivers to end up in the AHL or they can just be claimed by another team. So, first of all,
Jacob Bryson. We have Cameron Butler as well. Sheldon Dries, who I want to talk about later
in this video. William Lagasin, who is an NHL caliber defenseman actually. John Leonard,
going to talk about him too. And Dominic Shine. Now, a couple of these names are familiar
to Red Wings fans because they played in the NHL last year. For example, John Leonard
played really well. I thought he had a good showing last season and earned himself a new
contract. He will be going down to the AHL. Last season, four points in 11 games. Not bad
with the Detroit Red Wings. He also had a good showing in the AHL. But Mark, what do you make
of some of these cuts? Because besides the players themselves, I think this is lending, you know,
to us all realizing there's a couple names that will be making the team, which we'll get into
the lineup in a second and what's going tonight in their next preseason game. But a couple other
younger players that are going to get those roles over guys like Leonard, Dries, and a few others
as well. Looking at the names, you want to look at it and say, hey, there's a great chance a lot
of these guys clear waivers. Of course, teams are going to be very active over the next couple days.
They're looking to add the depth. If you see a guy that put up four points in 11 games,
maybe you look at that and you say, hey, we're already at the bottom of the pecking order. We're
at 31 when it comes to the waiver claims. Why don't we just throw one in? But I think a lot
of teams are going to be wary of this with a lot of camps still going. A lot of non-cops already
happening. I think a lot of teams are going to look at the bigger picture and say, hey,
if we wait a couple days, maybe there's a name that hits it. That's a little bigger, a lot better.
And honestly, that's a blessing in disguise for Detroit because a lot of the guys like John
Leonard, Dries, Shine, all these guys are players that show they can play in the NHL in a bottom six.
I like to say that they should clear it, but it also worries me with teams like maybe Carolina,
where they have 32nd when it comes to the waiver picks. Maybe that's a little missing piece that
they look at and say, hey, why don't we just snag that, see how it works. But again, a lot of teams
that are that far down already have their solidified roster. So thankfully and hopefully,
Darius, that Grand Rapids gets all three of the guys down or all five or six of the guys.
But I do worry that maybe a team sees an underlining hidden gem in one of them.
Yeah, and I think the timing is good, too, because obviously a lot of teams haven't made
their cuts yet. That was only a select few teams, as you can see here, including the Islanders,
the Capitals, the Dallas Stars. So by sending so many guys down now with a lot of teams still
making decisions, maybe it's going to be a little bit easier for them to go through waivers. I don't
necessarily see any of these guys being claimed off waivers by another team, maybe a legacy.
I think he's a decent NHL defenseman can offer depth minutes for a team out there. I also really
hope that Dominic Shine does not get claimed because he I really like what he brought to
the team last year, especially as a depth option. I'm not saying he's a number one center or
anything like that, but, you know, he he fought last night, too. And I think that, you know,
he can bring something to a team. And speaking of fighting a physical play, a huge factor,
a huge narrative around this team is they need to be tougher, which is true. Right. And I think
it comes through the entire organization from top down through every single player. It just can't be
your fourth line that is tough. Now, Michael Postova trying to do that last night. This is
not necessarily what we meant in terms of physical play. This is insane, by the way, doing a full
handstand or headstand on the ice. But that was a pretty cool play. Obviously, they played last
night. There was a lot of guys who were fighting for spots in that game. But now tonight, their
next preseason game, this is the roster that is going tonight. This is a lot closer to a team
that you may see on opening night for the Red Wings. Now, there's a lot of guys still that I
think will, you know, get cuts and sent back down to Grand Rapids. But if you look at some of the
lines and how they're shaping up, and this is from Max, this is really what they're, and you can see
that Appleton was with MBN and Danielson in practice. So I'm guessing this is what it'll
look like. Again, there's some guys that I still think, of course, in this lineup are going to be
sent down to Grand Rapids. But you're getting another look at Danielson, who can absolutely
make this team. MBN, I think they're quite literally relying on him for depth scoring this year
in that role. And of course, Appleton is going to make the team. Roche has been a great acquisition,
right? Great signing. We did a video on that last week. So, Mark, what do you make of some
of these lines? Because again, Arvinson, you know, he was a big signing to help with the five-on-five
scoring. Finney Casper, they're going to be in the mix too. But this is a really good look,
another really good look. And of course, the defense brings too. We can talk about that.
But this is another really good look at some guys that are still scrapping for spots, but I think
And I think looking at the lineup as well, it's going to show that a lot of these lines are going
to be mirroring what we see in Game 1 of this season. Of course, Finney Casper and Arvinson
is very interesting. Of course, five-on-five scoring is something this team desperately
needs to continue to work on. Arvinson was incredible with that last year. Maybe this
is where we're going to see Todd say, hey, we're going to get two young guys with an experienced
guy. See how this works out. And the second line showing there, which probably would end up being
about a third line in the NHL. But nonetheless, it's nice that they're giving these opportunities
with a couple young guys to work with the veterans, see if there's chemistry. Can you
continue working three? But I think the biggest question for me is, of course, the young guys
look great during camp. They're hungry. They want this spot. We've seen Todd come in and say, hey,
they played incredible. Or maybe our vets just played terribly. But I'm really excited to see
how some of these guys that have been around, that are a part of this team, that's been through the
grit and grind that they dealt with last year, not making the playoffs again. And Ben Charant,
of course, is making the push. There's a lot of guys. Darius, it's going to get interesting,
but I truly do think there's going to be a lot of surprising pieces, especially those young guys
not wanting to go back to Grand Rapids, which, listen, is a beautiful place. You want to play
there. But being in the NHL is not only a privilege, but something these guys are fighting
for their lives to do to start the year. Yeah, absolutely. And if you're a young
prospect like an MDN, you don't want to go down, especially to start the season with
how many names left, you know, the JVRs, the Patrick Cains. You want to make an impact in
the NHL this year. You want that spot, right? And Danielson as well. I think that he can definitely
help this team. And of course, last year, you know, missing some time due to injury,
and that's why he didn't play in the playoffs or Grand Rapids as well. But again, a lot of names
that I think could make the team in this game tonight. And of course, you're missing guys like
Kolasar and, you know, the locks as well, and the Lucas Raimonds of the world. But at the same time,
there's a lot to look forward to in this game. We also learned that John Gibson will play the
first two periods, and then we'll get a look at Trey Augustine in the third period. Don't
necessarily love that. I know that you want your starting goaltender to see some shots yet work,
and that's, you know, the time you want it. Of course, that's what you want to see. But I think
that you should probably split it in half the game and have Trey Augustine take, you know,
half the game away from John Gibson, get some work in himself. I want to see what Trey Augustine has
in a situation like this, right? So that'll be interesting to monitor too. One last thing here
before we wrap up. So Detroit Red Wings usually have, they don't give regular jerseys to anybody,
right? They do that weird thing with the nameplate where it's not the actual nameplate
on the preseason jerseys. And if you don't actually make the team, you don't get like
the real Red Wings jersey with the nameplate, whatever, right? So this year they did not do
that because there's only four preseason games. I think that's a little weird. Call me a
traditionalist. Maybe that's just the way I am. I like left shots on the left side. I like right
shots on the right side, whatever. But you know, I don't necessarily love that. I think that they
should continue because they're the Red Wings, because their original six-team traditions like
that, even if it is for four preseason games. And if it's like a cost-saving measure, that's insane,
right? We've been doing it for years at this point. So Mark, any thoughts on that? Any thoughts on
Trey Augustine as well? Listen, if this breaks the curse of us not making the playoffs, I'm all
for it. Listen, something has to change at some point. So hey, maybe this is what we look back
when they win the Stanley Cup this season. And we say, hey, this is exactly why it happened,
of course. It's not going to be the only reason. But fans, let us know your thoughts on everything
to do down below on this team. Because of course, there's a lot of interesting pieces.
The Prossiva looks awesome. You have Trey Augustine showing out for Detroit tonight.
You have so many question marks around the team. Who do you think is going to be the biggest
surprise? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments, because we love reading through each
and every one of them. I've been your host, Mark, with my co-host Darius. And take care,
Red Wings fans.
