Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel, Getty Official, and today I want to talk about the topic of food waste.
Now let's go to our first page, which is our vocabulary words.
Our first word is go to waste.
Go to waste means that just something not as planned and going into the trash bin or garbage.
For example, you bought three oranges. One of them are rotten. One of them have bacteria.
You have to throw two of them away. You don't want to get sick, right?
So what do you do? Throw them away. So those two oranges go to waste.
Secondly, we have the word portion.
Portion means a single part or a small amount.
So yes, what do you do if you have three people at the dining table and one piece of beef?
Correct, you cut it into three pieces. Each has a portion, a small amount of beef.
Thirdly, we have the word disregard.
Disregard means to not think about or to ignore.
So yeah, we ignore something, we can say disregard instead of ignore. That's another word.
Fourthly, the word foot the bill.
We have responsibility to pay for a service or a product.
That is what foot the bill means.
Now, here's our fifth word, prematurely, which means it's too soon.
For example, if you schedule a time meeting with your friends, probably at 9 o'clock at Target,
but you arrive at 8.30, that means you arrived prematurely.
So you can say, oh, I arrived prematurely. That means too soon.
Sixthly, edible. Edible is good enough to eat.
For example, some insects are edible, some are not. Some are unhealthy, some are good.
So, for example, as ants, crickets, like that, are edible for humans, good to eat.
But some animals or insects, like cockroaches, are not good for people.
And people shouldn't eat it too. Sometimes it's too disgusting to eat.
Inadequate. Inadequate means that not good enough.
For example, you want to eat or drink orange juice.
But when you start to drink one gulp, you think it's too inadequate.
Inadequate. Inadequate means that it's not good enough.
Or, technically, it's too sour. So you need more sugar.
Or just a bit more water, orange, like that.
Now we have the word greenhouse gas.
It means something that attracts the heat of the atmosphere, like a chocolate sphere.
It's the place that we live and where we have air around me.
Chocolate sphere basically starts from our feet. It's where the sky begins.
But greenhouse gas is something that attracts the heat of the atmosphere from the sun.
If you have a greenhouse gas, that means that smoke, steam, that's something.
Such as atoms or molecules will be stuck in it.
And it contributes to the greenhouse effect. Yes.
Our second last word is discard.
Discard is to reject something.
For example, your friend is calling you.
And they text you that I'm calling.
But you discard it.
That means you reject it or you decline it.
It's not disregard.
Disregard is almost the same as discard.
You just need to remove R and E and put the C in.
Remove R, E, G, and put a C instead.
So that is discard. It's almost the same meaning too.
To ignore or to reject or decline something.
And our last word is compost.
Compost is to break down organic material.
For example, the two oranges that you just put away.
Make sure to put it in dirt.
So it can compost and you can just reuse it.
You can just take net oranges.
Right? Take the oranges.
Throw them in the dirt if it's not good or like that.
It will decompose or compost.
And it will turn into dirt, soil material, and humus.
Well, you can just take it.
Take the dirt from the oranges.
The oranges decompose and it turns to dirt.
And plant trees.
Plant plants.
Okay, now it's time for the reading.
We have our first paragraph.
Paragraph number one.
Over one third of the food that is produced in here goes to waste.
One third.
One third means that you have three parts.
First part, second part, and third part over here.
One part of it takes away.
That means it goes to waste.
And the rest of the two parts you eat.
Or you do something else with it.
So that's what.
Then food waste occurs in developed countries where people store.
Often consumed up to two times more food than is required.
Well sure, food waste often occurs in developed countries.
Or not much involving countries, but sometimes also involving countries.
If possible.
It also occurs in developing nations.
Also nations, not just countries.
Where improper farming techniques and food storage cause food to spoil.
For example, farmers would spray, spray, spray poison in it.
And it will make us burp.
Our stomachs.
Or other causes.
Our second paragraph is how much does your favorite restaurant waste.
Waste food, I guess.
Restaurant portion sizes are getting larger and larger every day, you know.
The portions are bigger.
For example, if you like fish, you go to a fish restaurant.
Eat fish.
But half of the portions are getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.
Until it's one second.
That is kind of it.
Children almost never finish their meals in restaurants.
Yes, that's correct.
Like me.
I almost never finish the meals at restaurants.
I sometimes feel too full.
And business workers are often the worst offenders for wasting food in restaurants.
I know business workers kind of are busy.
But they are the worst offenders of wasting food.
It's easier to disregard, to ignore food waste when you aren't paying the product or paying food.
Yes.
How much food do you think gets wasted?
That's all you can eat in buffet style restaurants.
You like eating buffet? Me too. I like eating buffet.
Our third paragraph.
According to U.S. studies, 90% of Americans throw out prematurely.
That means too soon.
Due to confusion of food dating.
Yes.
Sometimes they are confused or the expiration of the food.
There is when they make it and when it ends.
So sometimes they are confused.
Most packaged food comes with a best before date.
Most packaged food.
They are packaged and manipulated to our place.
They are closely manufactured, really, really clean.
And safe.
So they have a better best before date.
Before the expiration.
Even a bottle of water has an expiration date.
Yes.
For example.
Let's see.
What about Labby, Aquafina?
Those also have expiration dates.
Do you throw out the food the moment the best before date passes?
Well, the best before date passes.
Yes, I do.
I don't like eating food that is over or expirated by the date.
Many people incorrectly believe they will get food poisoning if they eat food that is past use by the date.
They will, but they won't.
I guess that they can sometimes be food poisoning.
Or they may need to visit the hospital for some reason.
While your food may no longer be as fresh as what you wanted, it will likely be edible.
Good enough to eat for a few more days or weeks.
That's correct.
For example, when you buy food.
Or, yes, food.
And banana, especially banana.
If you put it too long, it would look black.
Right? Black.
Well, black isn't why you shouldn't eat it.
Black dots on the banana means it's ripe.
And it's edible.
It's yummy, and you can still eat it.
But if you eat a banana and taste it with a spicy or tickling tongue, that means it's rotten.
I do not like bananas that are rotten because I really like eating bananas.
Developing nations have the opposite problem.
Well, the opposite problem is...
It's just the other nations that if they think it's black or something like that, they would just throw it away.
Inadequate.
Inadequate means not good enough, which means that food is spoiled.
Too much, too soon.
Well, not for me because I often eat food that the storage is normal.
Not too cold, not too deep like that.
In fact, poor country food often spoils before you can leave for the water.
Such as bananas, corn, like that.
Our last paragraph.
Food waste is bad or you cannot eat as well as a designer.
Water, land, and energy are wasted on producing that never makes a charm out.
Well, yeah, sometimes I guess it's correct.
It never makes charm out due to something.
Produce that doesn't look edible due to its abnormal shape or size that is left in the field.
And this discarded food wants to decompose it properly.
Well, if you eat food and fruits, especially fruits, it can decompose.
But if food, no.
No.
Food cannot decompose.
Remember, do not throw food in dirt.
Approximately 10% of greenhouse gases, the affected greenhouse effect, comes from food that is grown but not eaten.
So, now let's just explain this.
The greenhouse effect, the gas in it, comes from the food.
But it's not grown.
So, for eating, should wealthy nations pay a food waste tax?
Well, Pope Francis did say that throwing away food and stealing from the table of those who are poor and hungry.
So, please do not just destroy the food and throw them, make them go to waste.
I guess it's the end of our lesson today.
Hope to see you guys soon and goodbye.
See you guys later.
