A Fort Worth school temporarily relocated its students
and staff to another campus for the
rest of the year. The entire South High Mount Elementary School
was cleared out. The 90-year-old
school is in dire need of repairs.
Fox 4's Dionne Englund joins us now with more. Dionne.
Hi there, Eden. That's right.
Safety concerns have prompted the complete relocation
of a Fort Worth elementary school, South High Mount Elementary.
The structural soundness of the building itself has sparked
the changes. District officials say on Tuesday, maintenance workers
observed cracks within the building that indicated movement.
On the northeast end of the building, a view from Sky 4 shows
the campus activity after the discovery was made.
The affected area includes the main office and four classrooms.
The engineers recommended
the areas remain unoccupied until repairs can be completed.
The temporary campus for South High Mount students will
be Western Hills Primary, a campus about five miles west.
West.
Of the school, the superintendent says the district
is working to help families deal with the inconvenience.
I know it's five miles away roughly.
It is inconvenient. We know it is. We understand that.
But this seems to be years in the making and we are very,
very fortunate and very thankful of our
maintenance staff for catching it and seeing
that there were some cracks on the walls on the inside
of the building. Therefore,
the engineering firm went underneath and looked at it. So it's been
shored up. It's being held up.
But that's not where we want kids or staff walking back and forth.
And there will be a second opinion conducted
by a separate engineering firm.
For now, students are being confined to areas
of the campus that are away from the affected area.
They will relocate to the new campus upon
their return from Thanksgiving break.
So there will be also a meeting on Monday afternoon at 5.30 in the
South High Mount Cafeteria for parents with questions and concerns.
Again, the superintendent points out
this is very proactive, but it must be done.
At the very latest, live, Eden, back to you.
