Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa introduced members
of her transition team, including a former Republican state senator.
She also said she's interviewing candidates to replace
the current head of the Texas Education Agency,
Fox 4's Alex Boye, live with more on what she had to say.
Alex.
Hey guys and that news conference was relatively short.
I can tell you as you already mentioned
that there was announcements today made of some
of her first senior transition team members.
Afterwards then the governor-elect did take some questions
from reporters. Take a look.
Now the governor-elect held her first
Post-victory news conference on the UT Austin campus.
She was flanked by some of her senior transition team,
and they include a former Austin ISD school board trustee
she once served with, which Hinojosa says
shows her dedication to public education.
Also, the executive director of the Texas Building Trades Council
Which Hinojosa says shows her commitment
to putting money in the pocket of Texans.
And then the team also includes
a former Republican state lawmaker, Ernest Bales,
who introduced himself at the news conference today
as a conservative Republican.
Hinojosa called him a close ally.
Hinojosa said that she is building a bipartisan transition team
to best serve the people of Texas.
I'm excited about this historic day,
and I'm excited about building a government that
is working for the people of Texas.
We are forging a new way forward.
People are tired of the divisions,
of the fighting, tired of the culture wars.
This is a time to come together in a way
that is about just delivering for the people of
Texas.
Hinojosa also addressed Republican State Representative Brian
Harrison's call for Abbott to order a special legislative session
in an effort to try and limit the governor and lieutenant governor's
emergency powers before new Texas Democrats are sworn into office.
Harrison tried but failed to push forward legislation limiting
the governor's powers in 2022.
I would hope that.
Elected leaders from both parties don't get
in the way of the progress we can make together
to deliver for working people.
That is our obligation as leaders in this state,
and I look forward to working with
Republican leaders in the legislature.
And Hinojosa said Governor Abbott has been very cooperative,
vowing to help her have a smooth
transition into office.
She says that they've only spoken once, but that their teams are in
constant communication.
Hinojosa says that her transition team will be announced in waves in
the coming weeks. And at the news conference today,
Hinojosa did not get into specifics
about what her legislative priorities will
be once she is sworn into office. We do know
from her victory speech that she did say
on her first day in office that she does plan
to fire the TEA commissioner.
At the news conference today, when asked about those plans,
she did say that her staff
is currently interviewing candidates to replace him.
