Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, Rashi Rice,
has filed for bankruptcy as he deals with
the financial fallout from his 2024 crash in Dallas.
So he's now facing multiple lawsuits seeking damages
from that six-car pileup.
Police say he was driving more than 100 miles
per hour before the crash on 75.
Fox 4's Amelia Jones in studio tonight
with more on what the filing could mean.
Amelia.
Hi there, Heather and Steve.
While Rushie Rice filed for bankruptcy, an attorney I spoke with
says we still have to wait and see if he, in fact, qualifies.
However, since he did file what's called
a suggestion of bankruptcy,
this essentially forces a pause on all pending litigation.
Rushie Rice is back in the headlines,
and it's not for his play on the field.
The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver filed
for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Wednesday.
Amid multiple ongoing lawsuits for his role
in a March 2024 street racing crash on Highway 75 in Dallas.
Rice is in the final year of his rookie contract
and expected to make at least
1.5 million this year, and even more if he's re-signed,
which may affect his eligibility.
So the only other way that he could qualify
for a chapter seven is if a debtor
could establish that 51% or more of his total debt.
Is business related.
Donald Hood is a bankruptcy
attorney not involved in this case.
According to the bankruptcy filing,
Rice has more than $3 million in
debt.
A big chunk of that is from
pending civil litigation.
Multiple victims from the six-car pileup
crash filed lawsuits seeking damages.
And the filings show a portion of Rice's wages
are already being garnished to pay some victims.
But since Rice filed a suggestion of bankruptcy,
this essentially hits the pause button on the litigation.
I asked Hood if this could be a strategy
to get out of paying the damages.
He said yes, it could be.
But he added the victims could still see
payment once Rice's assets are liquidated.
Something, but probably nowhere approximating
the amount of their claims.
Bryce's assets listed in the filing include a Mercedes Benz,
NFL jerseys and hats.
He also posted his Super Bowl 58 ring worth $160,000
as collateral for his attorney.
He did plead guilty to two third degree
felony charges connected to the crash.
He was sentenced to five years probation,
30 days in jail in order to pay $115,000
in victim restitution. He was also suspended for six games in the NFL.
I'm still waiting for any statement
or comment from the victim's attorneys in this case.
I'm also still waiting for a statement or comment from Rice's attorney.
The creditor's meeting is scheduled for December 11th.
