and a police-involved shooting rocks a Bronx neighborhood. Plus
You made it!
We can play it!
a community cries out for justice after
the shooting death of a teenager.
Right now Fox 5's Crime in the City.
Here are the crimes across
For our first story, we begin along
the Shore Parkway Greenway in Brooklyn,
where a woman was stabbed in the neck
the five boroughs.
while training for the TCS New York City Marathon.
She later died from her injuries.
Police are looking for that attacker this morning.
Good Days' Meredith Gorman joins us
with the latest on this brutal attack, Meredith.
Good morning.
Good morning.
Well, a 28-year-old woman remains on life support this morning after
being stabbed while out for a run in Brooklyn on Friday night.
Police have identified her as Katie Suarez, and they're still searching
for the person behind what they believe was a random attack.
The NYPD releasing this photo of Suarez in her running gear.
Investigators say she was running alone around
8 p.m. on Friday night along the Belt Parkway,
heading toward the Verrazzano Bridge.
She was attacked along
the waterfront path between Bay 8th and Bay 17th streets,
suffering stab wounds to both sides of her neck.
Suarez was taken to NYU Langone Health,
where she remains on life support.
The attack has left people in the neighborhood shaken,
with some now questioning just how safe
the popular waterfront path really is.
That's very shocking, makes me feel unsafe.
I was just planning to walk by near the ocean here,
and now since it's dark, it's kind of scary to walk around here,
especially by yourself at night, like as a woman.
I think they should put more lights here and more security,
like policemen, you know, walking.
We feel more safe then.
I have a daughter of 18 and she's,
when I speak, talk to her about, you know,
when you go around, go outside, you got to be vigilant.
She always put her, you know, the earbuds,
the earphone on and she like ignore me.
But yesterday I spoke to her the same way
and she started listening, you know.
You got to be vigilant.
One of the biggest concerns from people living nearby
is the lack of lighting along the path.
Once you get closer to the water,
some stretches are so dark it's difficult to see more than a few
feet ahead. State Senator Steve Chan is urging people
to be extra cautious, especially at night,
recommending they travel in groups and avoid areas with tall grass
or places where someone could hide.
I can't tell you how heartbroken I
am and how angry I am that this happened here.
I'm living here 50 years and I've never seen anything like this.
I've biked this path myself for hundreds of days in the past
and we are going to bring this animal to justice.
Meanwhile, police are still looking for the attacker
and asking anyone with information to come forward.
A reward of up to $10,000 is now being offered for information
that could help lead to an arrest.
We now head to the Fordham section of the Bronx, where a suspect
in a police-involved shooting was shot twice and sustained
non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody.
A 49-year-old man was shot several times, and police say officers
were forced to fire when the man pointed a gun at them.
Frances Wang, what's going on with this story?
Well, Rosanna, Dan, this all unfolded
at a deli in the Bronx on a Monday afternoon.
A man arguing with several people pulled out a gun.
And started pointing that gun,
which led the other customers to duck in fear.
This is the gun police say they found on 49-year-old Victor Soto.
So he was at the Sammy Gourmet Deli on Bainbridge Avenue
and East 194th Street in the Fordham section.
This was around 3 o'clock yesterday.
Police just happened to be on patrol.
That's when they saw Soto banging his gun on the window of the store.
And what happened next, police say, is what led to the shootout.
At this point two uniformed officers
in a marked NYPD vehicle arrive on scene, observe the
subject's actions and immediately issue verbal commands
for the subject to drop the weapon.
The subject not only disregarded the order to drop the weapon
but instead pointed the firearms
directly at the officers.
At this point there is an exchange of gunfire between the officers
and the subject. As the subject is discharging
his weapon he is continuing northbound and firing
...firing behind him in broad daylight.
Soto was shot several times
and he was taken to the hospital where he is now stable
and he is expected to recover.
We have learned Soto has been arrested eight times in the past
for charges including assault and possession of a firearm.
A law enforcement source also tells us
that Soto has a documented history of mental illness.
Neighbors in the area tell us he lives
nearby and that he's actually someone known for getting into arguments.
As I was getting home, right,
they started shooting each other and stuff.
They locked the street, the police come real quick and everything.
Now the NYPD's Force Investigation Division
is reviewing the shooting as they always do
in these situations. Police body camera footage
and surveillance from the deli will be key pieces
of evidence as investigators work
to determine what happened here and who fired first.
Back in Brooklyn,
we traveled to Bushwick where a driver faces DWI charges
after crashing into pedestrians at a Halloween event.
A collision involving a parked ambulance.
This is in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
It happened around 4 p.m. this afternoon.
We're still learning information.
You're looking at video that was shot from above.
Sky Fox was over the scene shortly after it happened.
It happened at Knickerbocker and Bleeker.
We're told a car collided onto the sidewalk into a private ambulance.
No word on what caused this, at least not yet.
We know six people were injured.
Kendall Green, he just got to the scene.
He's joining us live right now from the news unit.
Hi, Kendall.
Hey, what's going on, Steph?
This happened around four o'clock, as you just reported.
It was just outside of the 83rd Police Precinct here
on Knickerbocker Avenue, as you said.
And we're told the department here at the 83rd Precinct
were hosting some type of trunk or treat event when.
Those children and several other individuals were hit.
We're told six people total.
As we get you to some video from Sky Fox,
I just want to let you know what we know so far.
The crash took place within about
an hour before that event was supposed to end.
It was scheduled to end around 5, and police report
that crash involved a 56-year-old driver of a black sedan.
Thank you, Dan.
And there was also a 46-year-old passenger with him.
In that vehicle and police say he was driving on the sidewalk
of Bleeker Avenue when he collided with the parked ambulance.
That's the one that you see there on scene from Sky Fox with no one
inside of that ambulance along with multiple pedestrians. He hit
Six people were told.
Now we've learned just a moment ago that a 74-year-old woman
and an eight-year-old boy were transported to Wyckoff Medical Center,
reported in stable
condition. Also, a 31-year-old woman and both six
and 11-year-old girls were taken to Bellevue.
By EMS also reported in stable condition and finally a 53 year old
woman was taken to Elmhurst reported in stable condition as well.
Now we spoke to a witness who was with her children on scene
and she was describing she was there. She something that's told
her to stop I guess intuition or something and she looked up.
A few seconds later and saw that black sedan plowing
on the sidewalk into those individuals.
She described seeing a woman go into the air after she was hit.
And we're told three people were treated by police
and taken to the hospital before EMS could show up.
And this was just something that was supposed
to be a lighthearted Halloween event outside of the 83rd Precinct.
And this happens.
We're told the driver, that 56 year old male and a 46 year old woman
who was with him, they were both taken into custody.
Now what charges they're going to face remains unknown if they're going
to face charges regarding this event. But they were taken into custody.
The woman that we spoke with, a witness there on scene,
she shared that one of them admitted that they were under.
Under the influence of something, what that was,
I'm not sure, but we're going to learn
more about those charges coming up,
and we'll have those official charges coming up in the
10 o'clock newscast.
Last week, we told you of a 15-year-old teen
who was shot and killed in the Claremont section
of the Bronx.
Now, a community's calling for justice,
including the victim's grieving mother.
Police are still searching for those suspects.
Francis Wang, what do you know this morning?
Well, Rosanna, we can tell you this is absolutely devastating.
The mother, she sent her son to America with hopes of a better future.
Now she is making that same journey from Ghana to New York to bury him.
For the first time, we are hearing
from the mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong.
As police tell us this morning, still no arrests in his killings.
A community is grieving and demanding answers.
You see here dozens taken to the streets of the Bronx last night,
calling for justice for 15-year-old Javits Frimpong.
There have actually been several vigils,
rallies, walkouts since the teenager was
shot and killed last Thursday while he was on his way
to school in the Claremont section of the Bronx.
Police say they are searching for three teenage suspects
as investigators also work to determine why Javits was targeted.
His father says he had recently moved here from Ghana,
but instead of finding a fresh start,
his father says he faced repeated bullying from classmates.
Police have not confirmed whether bullying played a role in his death.
And now his mother, Doris Adu Gyanfi,
is making the journey from Ghana to New York.
Her U.S. visa was expedited following an appeal
from Mayor Mamdani to President Trump.
A mother who had dreamed of watching her son build a future here,
now speaking out about the future he'll never get to have.
Justice for my son, that's all.
She said she wants justice for her son.
I want my son to become a doctor.
Yes, she wanted her son to become a doctor,
and that was what he was hoping to become.
This morning, three suspects are still being sought
in connection with his killing.
Anyone with information is asked
to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
And finally, we leave the city for Long Island, where
a 16-year-old student was stabbed in the parking lot of a high school.
Authorities say they have another teenager
in custody after the attack was caught on camera.
Breaking news tonight.
A 15-year-old is in police custody after allegedly stabbing
a 16-year-old in a school parking lot on Long Island.
Fox 8's Jodi Goldberg is at the scene in Farmingville.
Jodi, what can you tell us?
Natasha, it happened right around dismissal,
according to school officials,
and both the victim as well as the alleged stabber are students here.
And tonight, we're getting a look at some of the video taken.
We did blur the faces because they are minors.
That's fun!
You can hear students screaming, someone shouting,
yes, yes, as students watch it all unfold.
Suffolk County Police say it happened around 2 o'clock this afternoon.
As students were being dismissed,
the 16-year-old was rushed to the hospital and is in serious condition.
As for the 15-year-old, accused of stabbing him,
he has since been arrested.
A large police presence followed what appeared to have been a brawl.
One parent we spoke with says she learned about it
on social media, not from the school.
No, I saw it reported on Facebook, actually.
And so did the school notify you?
No.
Pretty scary that a kid has a knife in a school.
Pretty scary.
And in a statement, the district says, quote, the health, safety
and welfare of our students remain our highest priority as a district.
It goes on to say the district will proactively work
with our own security team
and the Suffolk County Police Department to address those concerns.
And back out here tonight, police have
not released any details about what may have sparked the stabbing.
And they didn't elaborate on how the two students knew each other.
That's this week's Crime in the City,
