Two days after Election Day,
votes still being counted in a couple closely watched Senate
races as Democrats wait and watch for those results.
And many are also now wondering just what
they'll actually do to prepare as they take
control of Congress.
Fox 5's Linda Schmidt is live in the newsroom now with the latest.
Linda, what can you tell us so far?
Yeah, hi there, Ryan.
Well, first of all, in Mississippi and Alaska,
these are two extremely tight races.
And legal observers say that we may not know the final results.
Until next week, take a look at this.
In Mississippi, Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith
is hoping to retain her seat for a second full term.
She faced a difficult challenge, though, from Democrat Scott Colombe.
And in Alaska, the two major candidates there are asking supporters
to be patient as the vote count continues.
Incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan faced a hard-fought challenge
from the Democrat former Congresswoman Mary Peltola.
Now, the midterms were a bloodbath for the Republicans.
We all know that, but political experts say
the Democrats should not feel too comfortable
despite their historic wins,
now controlling the House and the Senate starting in January.
They say the Democratic victory was not an endorsement of Democrats,
but rather a rejection
of President Trump, and that Democrats should
not waste this historic victory on trying
to impeach the president.
Instead, focus on improving the economy.
Well, it'll be a mistake if they squander the opportunity.
It'll be a mistake if they pursue
impeachments that there are absolutely,
there's no chance of getting to 67 votes to convict and
remove in the Senate. Has never happened in our history.
By all indications, would not happen.
I don't know why you pursue a performative process
that you have no chance of completing. It just
seems to be for performance.
And I agree that Americans will not have patience for that kind
of accountability.
And at this moment in both Mississippi and Alaska,
both of those races there for the Senate seat,
the Democratic candidates are slightly in the lead.
Ryan, back upstairs to you.
All right. Thank you very much, Linda.
