And we are following developments
in two high-profile killings here in New York City,
both involving young people whose lives were cut short by violence.
The heartbreaking news out of Brooklyn,
a 28-year-old woman attacked while training and or running.
And then in the Bronx, a community remembering this 15-year-old boy
who was shot and killed.
Both of those cases still unsolved and still,
you know, relatively early in the investigation.
But there are two stories and two cases that...
I think really have affected people here in New York, Frances.
Yeah, and two stories that the more you learn
the details of, the more heartbreaking
it gets, right?
In one case, you have a 15-year-old
who just arrived in this country about a year ago to
be with his father.
His mother is still in Ghana, where he immigrated from.
According to Ghanaian outlets,
she is expected to arrive this morning, actually.
This is vigils from last night.
There have been several vigils,
but the mother is expected to be arriving in this country
at some point today for funeral services.
Police are still looking for three suspects
who they say were seen on surveillance footage
in both the Bronx and also in Manhattan prior to the incident.
Really?
The Bronx?
I think that was a relatively newish piece of information
because I know that there were
These people who were seen chasing him down the street
and he was seen running, so they
had that video.
But there's also images potentially
of them in the Manhattan area as well.
This is before the shooting and the killing.
So police have said they obviously have acknowledged
the bullying allegations that we learned from
the father.
They said they're also looking into potentially other motives,
robbery, one of them, because
Javits, the 15-year-old,
he apparently had a backpack that he had dropped at some point.
When they responded to the scene, that backpack was no longer there.
So they're looking into robbery, potentially,
and also mistaken identity, in addition to the bullying allegations
that the father had told us from the beginning of this case.
And so that young man's name, Javits from Hong, 15 years old,
shot and killed Thursday morning of last week, walking to school.
This is the Claremont section of the Bronx,
the vigil that you're seeing here just last night.
And I know we spoke to some people out there.
I think we have some sound from out there last night.
We'll play a little bit
of that right here.
Just forget it.
All right. So we are going to work on that a little bit there.
That's the picture of him
right there. But we're also tracking this runner who was attacked.
And we just got word that this
young woman died. And this is her right here.
Can you tell us about this? This is absolutely
devastating as well. 28-year-old Katie Suarez,
her family confirmed that they took her off life
support and that she died Monday.
There's supposed to be a vigil and a conference at some point
That was actually organized when she was still on life support,
declared brain dead in critical condition.
So you can imagine how devastating that is going to be
when family members, friends, loved ones,
community members come together later tonight in Brooklyn
to demand justice. They still don't know even who they're looking for,
because as you can see from
the scene footage here, this is a very desolate area.
There is water to one side, not a lot of
of cameras, but police have said.
Using license plate readers, they were able to track
at least 1,700 cars in this area during the time of the incident.
They are asking for people to come forward,
potentially maybe dash cam footage.
They've even said they will try to contact every single driver using
the license plate readers to see if any of them may have seen something
or had camera footage that caught something.
And there were reports that this young woman may have.
texted the family because she was on their way there
and then it was the father who actually
found her. And that's again we're learning more details
that really just make these stories so
devastating. She had just gone off work met up
with her mother was going on a run by herself
and had called her father who she
was also meeting up with at the end of the run.
She was only about a half mile away
and when she didn't show up her father
became concerned and went on the walkway to look for her.
All right, so we do have a little bit of sound
from some of the people who are out there in
this area. Let's just take a listen.
That's very shocking. Makes me feel
unsafe. I was just planning to walk by.
near the ocean here and now since it's dark it's kind
of scary to walk around here especially by
yourself at night like as a woman.
I think they should put more lights here and more security
like a policeman you know walking we feel more safe then.
I have a daughter of 18 and she's
when I speak uh talk to her about you know
when you go go out go around go outside you gotta
And she always put her, you know, the earmuff,
the earphone on, and she, like, ignored me.
But yesterday I spoke to her the same way,
and she started listening, you know.
You've got to be vigilant.
So Dan, it was her own father who,
while looking for her, because he hadn't heard from her
at the end of her run, who found her with multiple stab wounds.
Absolutely devastating. That was
last weekend or over the weekend when she was on life support
and her family took her off Monday
evening. Okay. All right, Frances,
I know we were going to hear from the NYPD on this. Do we have
that sound ready, Gab? Is it? Okay. So let's play that.
This is the Chief Kenney who is going to
Right now, everything's preliminary, but the way it's
shaping up right now, it seems like it's a random attack.
You know, we're looking at the timeline of when she left work
and when she started jogging.
It really, for someone to know where she would
be at that exact time is what's compelling to us.
So as of right now, we're treating this as a random attack.
Can you talk a little bit about the timeline when she left for work,
the stabbing, and when she was found?
So she gets out of work at about 6:30.
She meets her mom at about 6:50 and begins her run.
You know, her father arrives at the scene and gives her a call
a little bit before 8 o'clock and asks where she is.
And she says, hey, I'm about a half a mile away from you.
I'll be there shortly.
Turns out it was about .7 miles.
She is an avid runner.
She's very fit.
Family members tell us she does a
There's a 13-minute mile.
So after a couple of minutes, the father realizes something's wrong
because she should have been at the location already.
So he begins to walk down the path in an attempt to find her.
So again, hearing from NYPD Chief
of Detectives Joseph Kenney right there
sort of describing what we know about the case so far,
still an open investigation, and reminding many, including him,
of another high-profile case, and I remember this one very well,
the Karina Vetrano case.
What did he say about that just before we go to a break, Frances?
Well, he spoke about how he actually
was a detective on that case and it reminded him
and the other detectives working on this case of it
because very similar situation, a young
woman jogging on her own in Brooklyn
and a similar situation in which it was the father
of the victims who found them,
adding to the heartbreaking detail of these violent incidents.
They don't believe this was targeted.
They do believe at this point it was random,
but they don't really have a motive.
There is a $10,000 reward,
but they're really putting out a plea because, as you see, such
a dark, desolate area without surveillance cameras,
they're putting out a plea for people
to come forward, especially anyone
who may have been driving around that area during
the time of this horrible attack.
All right.
Frances, thank you very much.
And again, Katie Suarez, 28 years old,
announced within the last 24 hours that she has died.
And the other case that we're following,
the Javits-Frimpong case, 15 years old in the
Bronx.
Both of those, the NYPD working very hard trying
to solve those two high profile.
cases here in the city.
