Learn how to perform orchid propagation using faded flower spikes. This method helps you grow new plants from stem cuttings.
This guide demonstrates how to prepare orchid stems with dormant nodes for successful regrowth. You will see the step-by-step process of planting these prepared sections into small containers filled with moss to encourage healthy root development. By following these techniques, you can turn old flower stems into thriving young orchids.
After preparing your orchid cuttings, you will notice them producing new leaves and roots. This simple approach is ideal for anyone looking to increase their collection using basic materials found at home. Seeing the final results of these healthy young plants confirms that this propagation method works effectively for home growers.

This video demonstrates a simple method for propagating new orchid plants using faded flower spikes. By utilizing dormant nodes and a homemade nutrient solution of aloe vera and vitamin B1, the creator successfully grows two healthy young orchids over a 50-day period, eventually transplanting them into pine bark for continued growth.
Don't be so quick to throw away faded orchid flower spikes.
They can still produce new orchid
plants.
I used two tiny dormant nodes
to propagate two healthy young
orchid plants. What's special
is that I used only very simple
ingredients. After two months,
the results truly amazed me. First,
I selected a faded orchid flower spike
and cut it off from the mother plant.
Prioritize sections with healthy dormant nodes
that are not dried out or damaged.
I selected two dormant
nodes located near the base
of the flower spike.
These are the sections I want to use
to stimulate the growth of new plantlets.
Next, I gently
peeled away
the thin
membrane
surrounding
each dormant
node.
Then, I used a sharp knife to smooth the cut surfaces
at both ends of the flower spike sections.
This helps keep both cut
ends clean and removes
any remaining crushed
or damaged tissue.
Gentle handling helps
minimize unnecessary
damage during the
preparation process.
I will prepare a solution to soak the two dormant nodes.
The first ingredient
is a fresh aloe vera leaf
with thick, juicy gel inside.
I cut the aloe vera into small pieces
to make it easier to blend
into a smooth mixture.
Then, I put all
the aloe vera into a blender
with 300 milliliters of water.
I blend it thoroughly until
the gel combines with the water
to form a uniform mixture.
Then, I strain out
the pulp to obtain the
aloe vera solution.
After straining, I add one liter of water
and three vitamin B1 tablets, then stir well.
Once the mixture is uniform,
I soak the dormant nodes completely in the solution for 15 minutes.
While waiting for the dormant nodes to soak,
I use the remaining solution to soak the moss.
The aloe vera and vitamin B1 mixture helps
the moss retain moisture, creating favorable conditions
for the dormant nodes to develop.
After soaking for about 10 minutes,
I remove the two dormant nodes from the mixture.
Gently pat dry any remaining moisture on the outside.
Next, I apply a thin layer
of cinnamon powder to both cut ends
of the flower spike.
Then, place the flower spike in a dry,
well-ventilated area
to allow
the cut surfaces
to dry completely.
Now, I will prepare the tools to stimulate
the dormant nodes to develop into young plants.
I use previously used clear plastic cups
to save materials and help reduce plastic waste.
First, I make small holes in the bottom of the cups
to ensure proper
ventilation
and drainage.
Then, I prepare a piece of water-absorbing cord
and thread it through
the hole at the bottom
of the cup.
This cord will help draw water from the cup below
up to the
layer of
moss above.
I use two small cups to hold the dormant nodes
and two
larger cups
to hold
the water.
This setup allows me to easily monitor the moisture level
of the growing medium and add water whenever needed.

It's wonderful
that we can connect
with each other from
all around the world.
After preparing the tools,
I begin placing the moss
into the two small cups.
For that,
I gently
squeeze
the moss
to remove
excess
water.
Then, I add enough water to the cup,
so the cord can absorb it, and maintain moisture
in
the
moss.
Next,
I gently
place the
treated
moss
inside
the cups.
Place each flower spike section
with a dormant node on top of the moss layer.
Make sure the dormant nodes face upward so they have room to develop.
I regularly check the moisture level of the moss
and keep the plants in a place with bright,
indirect light.
And now, let's take
a look at the results
after 50 days of care.
I'm so happy that both
dormant nodes have developed
into young orchid plants.
You can see
that the
original cut
surfaces have
dried out
and are no longer moist as they were when first treated.
Both young plants have fresh green leaves and
are growing quite healthily and vigorously.
This is a very encouraging result after the care
and monitoring process.
Once the two young plants have grown strong
enough, I will transfer them to new pots.
I prepare pine bark
as the main
growing medium
for the orchids.
Next, I place each plant into a pot
and add moss to the surface of the pot.
After potting,
I place the two orchids in a spot
with gentle light and good ventilation.
So, from a faded orchid flower spike,
I now have two new orchid plants after two months of care.
However, not every dormant node will sprout.
The results depend on the vitality of the flower spike
and the care provided.
I hope this experience gives you another interesting idea
for propagating and caring for orchids.
