Use fish tank water for your Phalaenopsis orchid to help flowerless plants push new spikes and regain vitality.
Today I share how to use aquarium water to care for your orchids. By utilizing the natural waste already present in the water from your fish, you provide a gentle, direct source of nutrients without needing additional additives. This method is perfect for orchid enthusiasts looking for a simple way to boost plant health using items they already have at home.
Applying this fish tank water regularly can encourage growth in stagnant orchids. I demonstrate the application process so you can see how this organic approach supports root development and overall plant strength, even when dealing with stubborn, flowerless orchids that have stopped blooming.

This video demonstrates how to use aquarium water as a natural fertilizer for Phalaenopsis orchids. By utilizing the nitrogen, phosphorus, and minerals found in fish waste, the gardener improves leaf health, root growth, and flowering. The process involves careful plant pruning, strategic spraying, and mindful watering to ensure the orchid thrives without risking rot.
Today I will make use of a type of water
that might otherwise be discarded to care for my
Phalaenopsis orchid. This is aquarium water where
the fish's natural waste mixes into the water.
I don't add any other ingredients I use
this water directly.
I use the aquarium water to lightly
spray the leaves and water the plant's root system.
So what benefits can this water bring
to the orchid?
Let's follow along and find out.
First I carefully inspect
the entire orchid plant.
I gently remove the old
and yellowing leaves that can no longer grow well.
Next, I inspect each root section and cut away any roots that are dry,
shriveled, hollow,
or rotten.
At the same time,
I keep the roots that are still firm and healthy.
This helps keep the plant clean
and well-ventilated, creating
favorable conditions for its recovery.
First, spray aquarium water over all the orchid leaves.
Water from a healthy freshwater aquarium that is regularly cleaned
and has its water changed.
Aquarium water usually contains some nitrogen,
phosphorus,
as well as certain minerals and organic matter.
They are produced through the
fish's natural life processes.
These nutrients can help provide natural nourishment,
supporting the care and growth of the orchid.
For Phalaenopsis orchids,
you can use properly treated aquarium water
to spray the leaves about one to two times per month.
Do not spray too frequently to avoid the buildup of residue
and nutrients on the leaves.
After spraying,
I gently wipe each leaf with a
soft cloth to remove dirt and any
remaining aquarium water.
In particular, I make sure to dry the crown
and leaf axils to prevent water from lingering
and creating conditions for fungi and bacteria to grow.
This increases the risk of crown rot and leaf rot,
especially in humid and poorly ventilated conditions.
Therefore, I always dry
these areas thoroughly
to keep the plant clean
and safer after care.
Next, I continue using the prepared aquarium water
to evenly water the surface of the growing medium.
I slowly pour the water around the pot,
allowing it to gradually seep through the gaps in the
growing medium and reach the root system,
providing some of the natural organic nutrients
found in the aquarium water. During watering,
I make sure to distribute the water evenly.
Avoiding pouring too quickly, which could cause the water
to overflow before it has time to soak into the growing medium.
I also avoid using too much water to prevent
the growing medium from staying wet for too long.

After watering, I place the pot
in a well-ventilated area,
allowing all excess water
to drain through
the drainage holes at the bottom.
After two months of care using aquarium water,
let's take a look at the changes in these
Phalaenopsis
orchids.
The first noticeable change is that the leaves
have become greener, thicker, and firmer.
The leaf surfaces look healthy and firm,
with well-developed leaf blades that retain their
natural
green color.
Many new roots continue to grow longer,
develop vigorously, and spread outward beyond the
sides
of the pot.
The fresh green, shiny root tips show
that the plant is continuing to develop new roots.
Not only the leaves and roots,
but the changes in the flowers are also remarkable.
The flower spikes have grown longer,
carrying many buds, and the flowers have gradually
blossomed one
after another.
These changes show that the orchids have made
positive progress after two months of care.
