To cut off the enemy's supply of offensive weapons, Kyiv is now attacking Russian arms factories in the country's interior. And it's succeeding: four facilities have been hit in recent days, Der Spiegel reports .
The new Ukrainian tactics were apparently made possible by the arrival of new batches of British-French cruise missiles.
Storm Shadow and Scalp missiles have been in use by Ukraine for some time and have a range of 300 kilometers. Their stealthy characteristics make them difficult for Russian air defenses to detect. It is noted that this gives them a decisive advantage over Ukrainian-made missiles.
"While the Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile has a significantly longer range than the Storm Shadows, its bulky design also results in a high radar signature, making it easily detectable by Russian intelligence," the publication writes.
In the summer, Ukraine successfully launched two Flamingo missile strikes on Russian factories located deep behind enemy lines.
The Russians are said to have shot down so many of these missiles that the Firepoint's manufacturer is now forced to make some adjustments to the design.
Russian air defense systems are currently operating at the limits of their capabilities, explains military expert Douglas Barry of the International Institute for Strategic Studies: "The Russians have a large, but not unlimited, arsenal. Moreover, they need to defend a vast country." According to Barry, the Yelabuga plant where the dangerous Geran drones are manufactured is well-defended. Ukraine attempted to strike it, but was initially unsuccessful due to its dense air defense network.
Importantly, along with other measures, attacks on factories could disrupt supply chains and at least reduce Russian airstrikes.
"There are always breaks in missile attacks; weapons usually go straight from the factory into service," Barry explained.
Deliveries of Storm Shadow and Scalp missiles are becoming increasingly challenging as their production has ceased. The UK and France initially planned to resume production, but this plan has apparently been postponed.
It is claimed that the structurally similar German Taurus cruise missile could be an alternative, but the German government is categorically against its delivery. Thus, Ukrainians are increasingly relying on their own weapons. In addition to the Flamingo and Neptune missiles, they have also developed ballistic missiles.
"However, these FP-7 and FP-9 missiles are more suitable for hitting mobile targets than large factories. Furthermore, like the Flamingo, they were developed under wartime conditions without extensive testing. Their actual effectiveness is questionable," they added.
