The Ukrainian armoured vehicles sped out of the forest towards the village of Nove.

It looked like a suicidal gambit, with drones covering every inch of territory on this crucial part of the front line in the Donetsk region.

Indeed, as the counter-attack north of Lyman began on May 22, Russian units published footage of drones striking at least two vehicles in the vanguard. The attack had been “eliminated”, boasted one Russian Telegram channel.

For a moment, Ukrainian footage appeared online contradicting those claims – and showing a successful advance – only to be swiftly withdrawn.

To the online community of open-source intelligence analysts who attempt to trace every shift on the front line, this was the first sign that a serious operation might have begun.

Four months later, after a deliberate information blackout by Ukrainian forces and these online war monitors, the results of the counter-attack are becoming clear.

“I think this is the most important attack of the year,” said Emil Kastehelmi, the co-founder of the Black Bird Group, a Helsinki-based war monitor. Kyiv’s forces appear to have cut off a Russian-occupied “bulge” above the devastated town of Lyman and potentially recaptured as much as 77 square miles.

It might not change the “big picture”, Kastehelmi added, but the attack would probably delay Moscow’s efforts to swarm across the so-called Fortress Belt cities that underpin Ukraine’s defences in Donbas.

Officially, the attack has not been acknowledged by the Ukrainian army. That the world found out about it at all owed much to Clement Molin, a 20-year-old French student and Osint analyst who held off publishing the evidence he had collected until its results appeared safe this week.

The operation’s success relied on two tracks: violence on the ground and silence on the internet.

On Sept 1, Vladimir Putin gave no sign that he was aware a Ukrainian counter-attack was taking place in the Lyman direction.

Asked about the progress of the war on a visit to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Putin replied that he had just spoken with Gen Valeri Gerasimov, the chief of the general staff, and so had a “pretty objective” understanding of the situation on the front line.

Moscow’s forces had captured 14 settlements in a steady advance over the past month, he claimed, “including as of yesterday, the town of Sviatohirsk”.

The pretty, historic town perched on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets river was once known as the “Switzerland of the Donbas”.

If Putin had been correct about its capture, it would have marked an important staging point in his goal to seize the entirety of the Donbas.

From Sviatohirsk, Moscow’s forces might have bombarded an important supply line into Sloviansk, the city that marks the northernmost edge of the Fortress Belt. And they could have doubled back to complete an encirclement of Lyman, which Ukraine has held on to grimly since routing Russian forces in the Kharkiv counter-offensive of 2022.
