Pilot injured in small plane crash in Florida, officials say

A plane comes crashing down in New Smyrna Beach, and this is the aftermath of that violent crash hidden deep in the woods of Volusia County. Emergency crews scrambled out to Turnbull Bay in New Smyrna Beach this afternoon. And the brush was so thick that they couldn't even see the wreckage from the ground. Chancellor Wynn, live tonight from the Sheriff's Office. Chancellor, how is that pilot doing? Luann, we are still waiting on an update on that pilot's condition after the plane crashed deep in the woods, but the Volusia County Sheriff's Office says the pilot was the only person on board and had to be flown to the hospital. Look at the cockpit, a tree trunk straight through the plane after crashing around Turnbull Bay Road near I-95 in New Smyrna Beach around 2:20 Wednesday afternoon, right across the street from Sean Proctor. I was sitting in my backyard reading and just heard a loud crash. It kind of sounded like... Machinery, earth movers, something like that that had fallen over. It was just loud crunching. Proctor says he walked out to the street expecting a car accident, only to see emergency vehicles swarming the area. The sheriff's helicopter spotted the wreckage hidden in the brush and guided first responders in. New Smyrna Beach firefighters pulled the pilot from the crushed plane, airlifting the pilot straight to Halifax Health in Daytona Beach. No one on the ground was injured, but neighbors like Proctor say a crash this close hits uncomfortably close to home. It's just a scary thought, and it's probably only 150 yards from my house where it landed. It certainly makes you think about that airport that's very busy, has constant planes flying over. Right now, we're still working to learn where the plane took off from, where it was going, and if the pilot radioed for help before going down. Both the FAA and the NTSB have taken over this investigation to determine how that plane went down. Reporting live in Volusia County, Chancellor Nguyen, Fox 35 News.
