And Texas electing Democrats for the first time in more than 30 years.
It's been that way since we've elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate.
Juliana Jackson has more now on the race
and how both candidates are reacting.
Morning, Juliana.
Good morning, Katie and Dave.
This is one of the most talked about races in the entire country and
Democrats came out on top despite even backing by President Trump
and millions of dollars spent
on campaigns and political ads.
Ken Paxton just wasn't able to make the win last night.
After nearly four decades of Republican victories in Texas, U.S. Senate
elections, Democrat James Tallarico is heading to Washington.
Tallarico building his campaign around affordability,
political corruption, and bringing people together.
While Paxton campaigning on conservative values,
border security, and keeping Texas red.
Last night, Tallarico telling supporters
his win proves money can't buy an election.
We just took back Texas.
We just proved that all the money in the world
is no match for the people of Texas.
We just showed that a politics
of division is no match
for a politics of love.
And we just sent a message to every billionaire
mega-donor, every trillionaire mega-donor.
Every corrupt defender of this broken political system in this state,
in this country, power belongs to the people.
Meanwhile, Ken Paxton had some big names in his corner,
including President Trump,
who endorsed him over incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn.
Paxton acknowledging a tough night for Republicans,
but making it clear he isn't giving up on Texas.
I walk away from this job in a couple months,
and the best part of it is the memories of
working with so many great Texans,
and then the fact that as soon as I'm out of office,
I still have a lot of friends in Texas.
So I just want to finish
by saying that I love Texas.
I'll always love Texas.
We will still fight for this place.
We will fight for our country.
We've had a difficult night tonight across
the country, but it's not over.
This is a major win for National Democrats,
who were looking to flip Republican-held seats
and change the balance of power in Washington.
And Tallarico will now take over
the seat held by Republican John Cornyn.
This wasn't the only major victory for Democrats.
Gina Hinojosa also defeating Governor Greg Abbott
for the governor's seat,
turning the Texas mansion blue.
Reporting live at the Capitol, Juliana Jackson, back to you.
Juliana, thank you very much.
