Good morning, Jen, Aaron. We're here right in Bayshore
in the middle of Andrew Garbarino's congressional district where he
is narrowly holding on to a lead this morning.
This has been a reliably Republican stronghold for decades,
but Democrats have pushed things to the brink both here
and in Congressman Nick LaLota's district, which is just next door.
Neither of these races were considered toss-ups before the election,
but the blue wave has washed across here on Long Island
and nearly flipped.
Flip these two seats, and we'll see
when the final results ultimately come in.
Both Garbarino and LaLota are holding on to two-point leads
over Democrats Patrick Halpin and Chris Gallant, respectively.
Neither Democrat, though, has conceded just yet.
Now, for perspective, and this is important, just two years ago,
Garbarino won this district by 20 points and LaLota by 11.
So Democrats have made significant gains in both of these districts.
And this morning, we are asking voters
in the district how they're feeling about last night's results.
I just caught up with a voter
who said he cast his ballot for Garbarino and said he
was very surprised, ultimately, by the results.
I feel like he deserves to win again,
I feel like he's done a good job, and I just, I vote
all Republicans, so I hope he comes through with another victory.
Democrats also made improvements
in the two districts they currently
control Congressman Tom Suozzi,
improved by seven points this
year compared to two years ago.
Congresswoman Laura Gillen netted 11 points
this time compared to two years ago,
so these are races they already won
two years ago and are up again.
Bigger leads this time around.
We're in Bayshore in Suffolk County.
