Yeah, this does not come as a surprise.
Republicans have not won a statewide election in 20 years.
This was the expected outcome.
KTVU's Betty Yu live tonight from the Becerra
campaign in West Sacramento this evening.
Surely a lively crowd there behind you.
Definitely, Mike. The crowd here, very upbeat.
They've been celebratory all night long, and of course,
it's been a huge night for Javier Becerra.
He gave his victory speech a little over an hour ago, and he
also made history becoming the state's first Latino governor-elect
in more than 150 years. Now, the energy here has been electric.
The party, of course, still going on.
When he took the stage, he did so to thunderous applause.
His supporters have been chanting his name.
Throughout the night, they've been also saying the phrases,
yes, we can, and yes, we did.
He began his speech by thanking his supporters and his family.
He mentioned his wife and his three daughters.
Again, making history tonight, becoming
the state's first Latino governor-elect in more than a century.
He also reflected on his family's immigrant roots
and how his parents built their own California dream,
starting with just a few dollars in their pockets.
And while tonight is about celebrating,
Becerra does face some very real challenges ahead,
including the state's housing crisis and the high cost of living.
He also delivered a defiant message in his speech.
He vowed to stand up to the Trump administration
and protect California's immigrant communities.
Take a listen.
Listen.
Never in our lifetimes has so much of what we love
been on the line.
Our families, our safety, our freedom.
Freedom to love, freedom to learn.
Freedom to unionize and earn a living wage,
the right to see a doctor and the freedom to
make your own decisions about your body.
Freedom to breathe clean air, drink clean water, travel
unpolluted coastlines, freedom to walk
the streets without fear of gun violence or ICE mercenaries.
Tonight I have a message for all
those who have been made to feel afraid.
There's a new sheriff in town.
He's got a law degree and a union card.
His supporters tonight again celebrating what they're calling
a new chapter for California,
Becerra dubbed this era the Becerra era.
And I should also note that several Democratic figures
showed up tonight, including Attorney General Rob Bonta.
We also saw US Senators Alex Padilla
and Adam Schiff make appearances here tonight.
And also Governor Gavin Newsom sent his
Congratulations on social media.
Claudine and Mike, back to you.
Yes, certainly, Betty.
It's a different stance that we're seeing from some of the national
candidates when he's talking about the Trump administration,
a much more aggressive position and stance that I think that he
was also campaigning on to say that he will stand up for California.
Definitely. He mentioned that in his speech that he will
be protecting California's most vulnerable communities,
and that does include immigrant communities.
And he has appealed to those communities throughout his campaign.
Even though we should know he ran a pretty low key campaign,
he did not make as many.
public appearances as Republican Steve Hilton,
but of course he led this race by huge margin
and he went into today with a very comfortable advantage.
And to think he was only polling
in single digits earlier in the year here tonight,
governor-elect of the Golden State.
Betty Yuke, live tonight there in West Sac.
Betty, thank you. She mentioned Gavin Newsom's tweet.
I just want to read it saying in part
here, Javier Becerra will be a governor
who will carry the torch for California,
a son of immigrants, a product of the California dream,
who will stand up to Donald Trump and
represent our values. Congratulations.
That's Gavin Newsom on X Tonight.
