Here in the race for Massachusetts Senate,
Senator Ed Markey, the projected winner over
Republican challenger John Deaton.
That race called shortly after polls closed. We're about
60 seconds in. You can see the numbers there, 68% to 27%.
Kerry, you talked to Senator Markey
one-on-one with your copy of the candidates.
You asked him why after 50 years almost of serving as
a federally elected official here in Massachusetts,
why he wants to keep working. He said.
And this was his quote, President Trump brings out the malden in him.
Brings out the malden in him.
He says that quite often. It's one of his go-to lines.
But he is 80 years old. And that was a fair question.
Why do you still want to do this?
Other folks at that age maybe want to take it easy. But he is.
Clearly energetic.
We saw him speaking to his supporters tonight.
And he's up for a third term now, another six-year term.
Let's head out live to Boston, to Boston 25's Elie Murillo.
You've been following the Markey campaign
at the Mass Dems headquarters tonight.
Elie.
You did
so
magnificently
and you
cared so
deeply.
You left it all out on the field and we won.
And tonight we celebrate
because tomorrow we have work to do.
Supporters are calling it bittersweet as Markey has previously stated
that this will be his final term in office.
I mean, the energy here, you guys, has been absolutely insane.
I'm going to send it back to you in the studio.
Ellie, if you can hear us, because I know it's really loud there,
Senator Markey said he wasn't expecting a blue wave tonight.
He was expecting a blue tsunami.
So how are folks there and the senator feeling about some
of these other Senate races happening across the nation
And whether or not
Democrats will take control of the Senate.
Talking about that pretty much, you know, throughout the evening, he
did state when he cast his ballot in Malden that he was very confident
in tonight's election and that we would see that play out firsthand.
And I mean, he reiterated that in his victory speech here tonight,
thanking his family,
thanking all the voters that showed out tonight and making history.
And we're seeing that being played out nationwide right now.
And he did emphasize and he kept repeating it. There's more work to do.
Tonight we celebrate, but tomorrow we get back to work.
