Xavier Becerra holds commanding lead over Hilton

Of course, the race at the top of the voters' ballot is the race for California governor. That's right. And Democrat Javier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton are vying to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom as California's top executive. We have reporters at watch parties for both of these campaigns tonight. So let's start with KTVU's Betty Yu, who is live in West Sacramento at the Becerra campaign for us. Betty. That's right, Heather. We're here at Javier Becerra's election night watch party, where the doors will open in about 30 minutes for his supporters. You can see behind me the stage is set. He is expected to speak and address his supporters later on tonight. Now, he is the clear frontrunner in this race for governor. He holds a commanding lead over Republican Steve Hilton in the polls. Earlier today we saw Becerra cast his ballot here in his hometown of Sacramento. He has highlighted his decades of government and political experience, nearly 25 years in Congress, most recently serving as President Biden's Health and Human Services Secretary. And he's described himself as the underdog that stayed in this fight. Just five months ago, he was polling in the single digits in a crowded and contentious the primary before he shot to the top of the ticket. In June, he's promised to tackle California's high cost of living, build more housing, and protect health care access. And if elected, he could become California's first Latino governor in modern history. So potentially tonight we may see a historic election night here in Sacramento on top. For now, we'll send it back to you in the studio. And Betty, any idea when we may see Javier Becerra actually take the stage tonight? We've asked his team that question, but at this time, we don't have a time. We did hear that his wife, Carolina, will be speaking, and he will be the only other speaker tonight. Again, the doors open at 7:30, so we expect perhaps not too long after that to hear from Javier Becerra himself. Well, the polls close at 8, and we'll see you soon after that. Betty Yu, live tonight in West Sac. Betty, thank you.
