Several hundred firemen from various European countries marched today in Brussels to call for more jobs and better working conditions and equipment, after an increase of wildfires this summer in several European Union countries. According to Associated Press according to the organizers, delegates from at least 20 European countries took part in the march, to demand better staffing, safer working conditions and greater investment in fire services. "In all of Europe we are facing the reducing of the number of firefighters, while the national disasters, the wildfires is only growing," said Hardi Tiitus, a unit leader at the Moniste fire department, a small city in Estonia, who has traveled to Brussels for the demonstration. "We are pointing to the fact that we need extra budget, and we have to stop laying off the firefighters across Europe," said Tiitus. The European Federation of Public Service Unions, who called for the action, says that according to Eurostat figures, the EU had 372,400 professional firefighters in 2025, down from 390,600 in 2024. "We are facing the same difficulties all over Europe. We are facing issues over financing, over the equipment, over hirings and recruitment of firemen," said Arnaud Derga, a firefighter and trade union delegate from Perpignan, in the south of France. The extreme heat, which hit Europe exceptionally hard and early this year appears to have led to a much higher spike in deaths than expected. Fires in France and Spain drove hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, shut down nuclear reactors in Hungary and France, ignited century-old munitions on Belgium’s border with Germany and revealed previously lost ships sunk on riverbeds like a tugboat in Serbia. The heat and humidity that broke many records during the summer would not have been possible without climate change, according to a study by the World Weather Attribution group.
